442. The one winger formation is too predictable and one-dimensional. We don't play through the middle so all they do is double up on Noone and get a lump on CMS to win any crosses Noone does actually manage to get in, having been asked to do it all on his own. Paynter to drop to the bench- he was supposed to be an option. Plan B. Not Plan A, it isn't working at the moment. Ease Vicente in, ditto Buckley- either could start. Also LuaLua from the bench, but on with 30 minutes to go, not 2. Get Barnes back UPFRONT, where he actually plays. Then we might see him score/link up with CMS like v Leeds. Rather than in central midfield or stuck out on the wing, like...every game since.

I.e., the same team/formation as the previous games. He's not much of a rotation man, Gus, he's stubborn, which is in equal measure his greatest strength and his greatest weakness. I love him as much as the next man - and the mentality of short passing and possession football is great. But he has to accept the shape isn't working. You can only blame the personel for so long before the tactic itself has to be examined, and if you insist the players aren't good enough, then give someone else a go. Why hasn't LuaLua had a run in the side? Or Vincelot (who hasn't had a bad game yet as far as I can remember!)?. Don't change the philosophy, just the shape. Passing football can still be played in a 442.

PS: I'm less sure of the subs- the Gus 1st XI is all-but nailed on though (IMO).
