Its just one of those things, explosive vulcanism throws up particulates which clog plane engines and block out the sun and CAN cause lost summers and ergo, huge crop failures etc. Effusive vulcanism takes place more slowly but over a much longer timescale ( sometimes ! ) like the Deccan Flats, this just chucks loads of slow moving magma up and vast amounts of Co2 which causes global warming etc. etc.

Probably better than a meteor strike which really could be an extinction event......

We just have to be lucky, and STAY lucky
