I just got my record deck down from the attic. I got it re cartridges and set up properly for a party at the weekend. Next step is see if i can get my amp cleaned up and going again. Record collecting is an expensive business for a pauper like me but I really should get back into it.

Love a charity shop, car boot or jumble sale.

A little trick is find a buyer with multiple items you like as the postage tends to become cost effective around 3-5 albums, especially when the records are only a pound or two like much of the D&B I buy is

The price of new vinyl albums will vary due to the weight of the disc. Serious collectors prefer 180g or higher, as there is a view that the heavier the vinyl the better the sound quality. Anyone who brought albums in the mid 70s during the oil crisis will be aware of how poor the thin vinyl was at the time.
In terms of buying second hand, if you are new to buying used vinyl it is probably better to visit a specialist shop so that you can view both the disc and also the cover and sleeve to gauge the quality. It is also worth noting that serious collectors will pay far more for a first pressing which if you are only interested in the music is probably worth ignoring.
I would suggest a day out either to The Sound Machine in Reading or Reckless Records on Soho.

I don't know what it's like over there any more but here you just have to shop around - good example being the last Arcade Fire album which was going for anything between $30 and $50 when it came out in Perth. Ebay is good too, bought heaps on it over the years and never been ripped off (yet). The bulk of my collection is what I brought out here with me 20 years ago, all bought back in the day. I've been buying all my new music on vinyl again for around 3 years now and have a guilty dip back into the "lost vinyl years" (1995 to 2010 basically for me) every now and again to get a favourite album I have on cd but not vinyl - I picked up a new copy of Renegades by RATM in Bridgetown of all places recently for $30 which i was pretty pleased with. Keep the faith, vinyl is for life.....

Turntable is now down from attic and installed. Been playing 7" after 7", b-sides as well (luckily for her, my wife is away for a week). It's encouraged me to play songs I wouldn't normally play if faced with an iPod with 20,000 songs on it. I'd forgotten that the b-side of Love's Going Out Of Fashion by Biff Bang Pow was a cracker. Half-Hearted by Brighter also gets the thumbs up. Playing a 7" on a turntable makes an average song much more listenable.

I've only got the 7". I'm sure I can find this song somewhere though. I've largely ignored BBP since about 1987 - maybe they deserve more of my time.

I'm really keen on Special/Limited Editions as well. Picked up a SE of Queens of the stoneage's most recent album and it is a thing of beauty. There's a Mew vinyl limited to 500 copies which I keep narrowly missing out on, and a Sigur Ros boxset that is going for hundreds, individually stamped.

10 years on, I'm resurrecting this thread to ask the following question;

"Has anyone had success selling a medium-large collection of vinyl, where it isn't just an all old classical/50p a record type collection?"

I have a collection that according to Discogs (I know, I know...) is worth anywhere between 4-11k. I would consider selling all/most of it for a reasonable offer (I have a need to raise cash for a potentially exciting venture/career opportunity) but I recognise that could be really difficult.

Anyone had any luck/experiences?

Nothing ventured, etc. Seriously, he's an incredibly knowledgeable and clued-up guy...when it comes to music.
Mad as a box of frogs when it comes to anything else.
Oh, and he loves sausages, so take him a pack if you pop into his shop.

Ah man. My okay advice is really think this through. I did the same in my student days and have regretted it ever since, even after buying most of it back over the years.

I can fully understand that, but there does come a point where it's simply an asset. Unless you have an equally keen son/daughter/family member....what's going to happen to it?
Obviously, it's an age-related decision. but I don't want my o/h to be faced with the "what to do with all this?" question.
Also, it seems from @Mellotron's post that the potential funds could enhance his/her life in another way.
If so, why not?
