Latest theory after even more digging, is completely different. No critters, but possibly an old well or something as there seems to be some kind of roundish structure appearing. Had been partially filled in, probably ages ago with builders rubbish etc., but with the passage of time and water, a void has developed. Anyway, it will be filled in with concrete and hopefully that will be the end of it.
