from the Metoffice website:

"So far, the UK winter has been the coldest for over a decade. The last time winter temperatures were lower was in 1996/97.

Met Office forecasters expect the cold theme to the weather to continue well into next week with the chance of further snow. "

Its all down to the airstreams (wind currents) changing slightly , France and Spain got hammered by hurricanes just recently coming in from the Atlantic. Our cold weather has been caused by north-easterlies blowing in from Russia. In Australia they are suffering from a heatwave with temperatures in excess of 40 degrees.

They always say oh there must be global warming since it has been the warmest summer in a decade... well that means it must have been hotter a decade ago... so global warming doesn't exist.

At least 20 Australian people have lost their lives as a result of one of the worst heat waves to affect the southeast of the country.

According to the Australian authorities, most of the dead were elderly people.

The record-setting heat wave has also disrupted city transport systems in the region.

Trains have been called off as the rail lines have buckled in the intense heat.

It has also caused power black out for hundreds of thousands throughout Melbourne.

"What we're dealing with now is a one-in-70-year event," said Paul Bird, a spokesman for National Electricity Market Management Company Limited.

"Gradually sections will be turned on as they make more power available," he added.

Meanwhile, the heat triggered brush fires that have claimed at least 11 homes so far.

Temperatures have soared past 40C throughout the week and similar temperatures have been forecast for the next seven days.

The uk's weather is not representative of the entire world, average global temperatures are rising. The cold weather is down to a high north Atlantic oscillation index.

yes because the complex interacting systems that govern the planet's weather systems are really that simple

Don't be stupid, using big words will only confuse those that only consider the weather they can see through their net curtains!!!!!

Are you agreeing with me or disagreeing? Since people don't generally say "yes" infront of a sentence if they disagree.

I thought that the weather will get colder because of the melting of the polar ice caps.[/QUOTE
With the ice melting there is more water to disperse , so I was thinking the weather will get wetter , who knows to be honest , only future generations will know if global warming is catastrophic.

Also with the ice caps melting, less heat will be reflected back into space, so increasing the rate the earth warms up

er, there is little unusual about the weather. coldest since 97? by how much, half degree, couple degree average? was '97 a particularly cold winter by previous years, or have we had unusually mild winters recently? no idea but without such info the headline is meaningless. i certianly remember it being just as cold as this, it is sodding winter after all.

The "Global warming" we are experiencing at the moment is based on inadequate evidence, they have based it on such a short time frame, that would be the equivalent to opening any book, reading one page and then claimimng to be an expert and able to tell you the whole story, etc...

There have been numerous periods in the Earths history when there hasn't been any ice on the polar caps, and the Earths temperature has never been constant, but changes by cycles.

The scientists models for predicting global warming just haven't worked, because they are, after all just guess work.

The Lewes floods for example, all the hysteria at the time claiming that this was evidence of impending environmental disaster, and that Lewes would keep flooding every year, they failed to take into account the historical evidence that shows that Lewes flooded every 30 years or so throughout history, - however it does make good headlines, especially if your a egotistical politician.
