Unlikely places that you have had really good food.

Having to go through three chicken breasts to find one that was actually fully cooked in a central Paris branch put me off Flunch forever.
On the subject of uncooked meat in Paris ... I once stumbled across a very small family cafe in what was once the Paris Jewish Quarter, where the old woman who ran it suggested that we try her speciality steak tartare, with the "special sauce". It was certainly worth trying, even though the "special sauce" turned out to be a dollop of Heinz Tomato Ketchup, which she poured with a flourish over the top of the raw meat.

I was taken by a Portuguese friend to an establishment in Porto which was basically someone'e living room in which they were licensed to serve food. Apparently they have these in most Portuguese cities indicated by very small signs. Limited choice and wine list but delicious food and ridiculously cheap. Also Vrisaki in North London, amazing Greek restaurant hidden behind a kebab take away and always packed.
