Shoreham of course
What difference is it going to make if the student union is on the side of the Falmer residents, its not going to effect the outcome of the result of the pointless Judicial review.
I will like to hear a statement from the student union to what their opinion is and why they are on the Nimbys side.

OI! Nowt wrong with socialists.

Agree about the rest of those free-loading middle class bastards though.

Have you ever sold the Socialist Worker?

Why is it necessary to dye your hair/have facial piercings before being able to do so? It's discrimination.

This is the 2005 motion

Motion Opposing Falmer Stadium

1. Introduction

One of the purposes of the Students’ Union is to be an autonomous agitator within the overall ambition of the University, able to work in co-operation but contradict where necessary, its views and actions. The Union is in no way shape or form obligated to toe the line of the University.

The Union does not have an official stance on the building of the Falmer Stadium at the moment and I think it would be worthwhile having one.

Essentially, this motion is a request that the Union stance be one of - opposition in principle, but recognising that if the stadium is to be built, that the University takes steps to ensure that the detrimental impact of it on the campus is properly mitigated, and that our concerns with respect to this are presented accordingly.

2. Let me now briefly outline our concerns.

A(i). The contract –
The University signed a contract with the club in August 2003 and the Union has never been privy to the full details of this. The contract sees the University committing 1200 car park spaces for use on match days. The car parks that will be used are the Sports Centre car park, Sussex House, Biology Road, EDB and Bramber House – so right across campus!
The University will get £100K per year for the use of the spaces. Is that enough?
The club is responsible for ensuring the proper behaviour of spectators and preventing them from straying…!
The club is responsible for preventing any damage to the campus!

A(ii). So what about benefits brokered for students?
The University says that it is ‘potentially able to discuss with the club privileged access to the ground and facilities for… students’ and there are ‘potential opportunities for access to the stadium for student sporting clubs’. So nothing has been agreed for students! They couldn’t be bothered!

A(iii). So apart from the £100K per year, what are the other benefits?
On the 7th of February 2003 the University reported (in the Bulletin) that it had submitted a report to the public inquiry. However, at the University’s Council meeting held on the 4th of July 2003 it was reported that Brighton & Hove City Council had varied the University’s lease agreement so that the University is now able to build more freely in the future! The University then decided not to turn up to the public inquiry to express its concerns!

B. The University’s stance -
The University says that it has ‘maintained a carefully neutral stance on whether a new stadium should be built at Falmer since the site…was first identified as a possible location in 1998’, but I don’t believe it. Their actions and non-action would suggest otherwise.

C. The environment -
Sussex is the only UK University entirely located in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and will shortly become the only university with a campus bordering a National Park. The stadium would be located in a National Park. The Students’ Union and the University should be in the forefront of promoting environmentally sensitive policies.

The University has a travel plan and the main focus is ‘to reduce the impact of the University generated traffic on the environment and the local community’. The University also recently made a commitment to reduce carbon emissions on campus. A further increase in car usage on campus flies in the face of the Travel Plan and this recent commitment.

D. Safety and related issues -
The safety of students is of fundamental importance. The building of the stadium will inevitably mean that there is a higher security presence on campus on a much more consistent basis and this will change the dynamic of campus as we know it. Security staff being more vigilant will demand to see student ID, and students will get pissed off if they are constantly being asked. The likelihood of theft, vandalism and damage to property will increase dramatically and could have serious financial repercussions on the Union and the University.

3. Conclusion

The University has not properly mitigated the negative impact on the campus, of the stadium being built. The decision rides roughshod over the interests of students, staff and villagers alike. It is important that the University are made aware of our concerns and act upon then appropriately.

The Socialist Worker has little to do with socialism or working. It's a laughable rant from conspriacy theorists and lazy gits. It might not have been once upon a time, but it is now.

Other important issues discussed at the AGM included whether or not to ban the sale of Coca Cola from the university, and the Keep Wednesday Free campaign.

Well, one misinformed Portuguese student hardly constitutes much of a threat. As for the stuff about their official policy, it looks like they just think the university hasn't consulted them enough rather than having anything useful to say about the stadium itself.

To be honest, if that's the level of their debate I'm surprised the university bothers asking their opinion on anything
:)

Reading through that motion, it seems like they are more bothered about the safety of students on campus, and the security issues of the University itself, together with the lack of consultation from the University hierarchy rather than being fundamentally opposed to the stadium on ecological or NIMBY grounds.

Don't forget, the USSU has an ongoing spat with Falmer Parish Council about parking in the village, so it's fair to say that they are not best of friends.

Apart from, um, the University of Brighton.

Oh, and the stadium will almost certainly NOT be in the National Park, dickhead.

Right, so some scruffy goth with facial piercings and green hair finally drags his hungover, semi-stoned carcass out of bed, limps over to his PC, and decides that he'll come out with an 'official stance' on the Falmer stadium six months after a 2 year Public Inquiry on this whole subject has closed.

Typical students. Go back to bed, spotty.

What is worrying is that people are jumping on bandwagons and will vote in various referendums, when it has little or no effect on them. This portuguese chap obviously lives on campus and would vote against it if there were a local referendum. Yet, his main concern is safety. He will no doubt have moved by the time (god willing) the stadium is built.

Should the club invite people to write to them with their concerns? then put them at ease?

If that truly is their 'stance' then it is laughable.

Far too many exclamation marks and why use the term 'pissed off'?

Our futures are in safe hand, of that I'm not sure.

I honestly think that a fair clump of the students at Sussex University would be delighted at having a stadium on their doorstep. Any bored Saturday afternoon in November can be used having a few jars in one of the student bars, followed taking in a game using their student discount cards - even as a neutral. We could gain quite a few new fans that way. They'll be fine.

Having said that, someone should give that Portuguese kiddie a good shoeing on principle - even if only to prove his point.
