Uefa tightens anti-racism rules

Uefa has given referees the power to abandon matches in the event of racist chanting inside a stadium. European football's governing body has implemented a three-step procedure that comes into force with immediate effect.

The referee should first demand over the public address system that fans' racist behaviour should stop. The next step is to suspend the match for up to 10 minutes with the teams sent to the dressing room. If that does not work, the game should be abandoned.

Uefa president Michel Platini said there would be no compromise in his organisation's stance against racism in football. "Our policy on racism is one of zero tolerance," said Platini. "It was necessary to give the pitch people the means to do something, and we have determined the parameters and lines of conduct, whereby in important cases of racist behaviour in a stadium, a referee must stop the match.

"There are people of authority such as the referee and match delegate who can consult before deciding to temporarily suspend a match for five or 10 minutes, in agreement with officials responsible for security - and from then, if the atmosphere remains negative, the match must be stopped."

Platini first revealed plans to abandon matches in April of this year after Inter Milan striker Mario Balotelli was racially abused by Juventus fans. The Italian authorities ordered Juve to play their next home league game behind closed doors. England players Ashley Cole and Shaun Wright-Phillips were subjected to racial abuse when they played against Spain at Real Madrid's Bernabeu Stadium in 2004.

The decision was taken at a meeting of Uefa's executive committee in Vilnius, Lithuania.

If it is the home fans doing the rascist chanting, deduct them ten points for each occurence. The same for away fans at other's grounds. When the fans see their team plummeting down through the divisions, they may think twice about it...

Hmm, anyone fancy getting a crowd together when we are not playing and taking a trip to smellhurst? :)

I know what you mean. It must also open up the eventuality you outline for rival fans, not the fans of the two teams playing, to get other team's games abandoned...

STUPID, STUPID, STUPID.

So, Man Utd vs Barcelona in the Champions League at Old Trafford, a group of fans from either team start shouting racist chants at Eto'o/Ferdinand (take your pick). Too larger group to find/arrest them. Referee abandons the game. What happens to the 70k people in the stadium? Will MU admins have to sort out refunds? What about the 6k (or however many it is) Barca fans that booked tickets, flights, hotels, etc. They get full refunds if the abuse was from MU fans?

Can only appreciate UEFA trying to do something. But surely this just won't work? As Gerbil said, referees just wouldn't do it.

True but the rules dont aply to big clubs who can ignore them. This is way over the top, there are f***ing way worse things than racial chanting at matches.

Maybe when we get rid of this race obsessed government people will start getting a sense of proportion.

Oh and I bet it is the EFA whinging to UEFA.:censored:

Would refs be able to distinguish "racist" from purely "racial" and how is "importatnt" that appears in the instruction defined?

For example, is "Your Welsh and you know you are" just friendly banter???
What about cmments such as "Sheep sh*ggers" ??

That match when England played in Spain, our lot totally wimped out on the opportunity to make a stand against racism. They ought to have either stood sentrylike around Campbell (and whichever other non-white players), or just stopped playing and walked off.
I believe it was captained by Beckham - a missed chance there, and just pussy to keep playing under that barrage.
