Train trouble today Lewes -> Brighton

According to Southern website, a broken down train means trains can't travel from Lewes to Brighton at the moment

I hope this gets sorted sharpish.

No idea if this will still be causing problems tonight, but at present trains are NOT running from Lewes to Brighton because of a broken down train near Lewes. Trains are being diverted via Wivelsfield and Haywards Heath.

Trains from Brighton to Lewes can run normally, but will be delayed. 25 minute delays expected.

Train tickets being accepted on First Capital Connect and Brighton and Hove Buses.

What do they do with broken down trains? Can't they just get another locomotive to pull it along? Or does the next train along give it a push ?

Well ive heard from someone who works for Southern that its electrical problems and a train has lost power, so another train cant get on the line and recover it. Wouldnt surprise me if the electric rail has broken, happened a lot recently. If it has then this will probably continue this evening.

What do they do with broken down trains? Can't they just get another locomotive to pull it along?

Usualy leave them where they break-down until rush hour, so as many people as possible are affected.

Southern just replied to a tweet from someone on Twitter saying the problem should be cleared by this evening - basically that means it probably wont.

I mean, the Southern website is extremely clear with their information -

"A broken down train between Lewes and Falmer means that we are currently unable to run trains from Lewes to Brighton via Falmer. Trains running between Brighton and Lewes are running normally however."

They'll hardly be able to run any trains from Brighton until the line is running both ways shirley, as the trains have to come in from Lewes to Brighton before they can go back out again from Brighton to Lewes.

Going up to Haywards Heath, reversing there and back down to Brighton, then as normal to Lewes id of thought, will get there late though

Does this apply if you have an mega cheap advanced ticket which is the 2nd part of your journey

Its a nice idea, but in the middle of the evening rush hour? That would probably cause a bottleneck on the main line all the way up to London and back and I can't see them doing that somehow. Might be wrong.
