In 1910 the Conservatives fought alongside the Liberal Unionists (Liberals who had left the party in opposition to Irish Home Rule), much in the same way that the Liberal Party and the Social Democratic Party (Labour Party members who had quit as the party moved further to the left) fought together in the 1980s, before finally merging.
