If England's players don't have a hope of winning a one-off game in 2 hours of football before pens, that's on the manager and how they play under him.

I thought some of the players clearly looked pissed off with the tactics again last night, just like during the group games. None of those players play on the back foot for their clubs, so its obvious why, too. Why on earth did we go back to 4 at the back!? At least we looked half decent with the diamond midfield.

Bellingham looked like he wanted to trf to another nationality... I wouldn't blame him for being surrounded by also rans in the starting line up... Rice behind him, Kane in front of him....

Absolutely this. There's no way we should just move on thinking oh well we'd never have beaten them unless on pens anyway. There's no way with this group of players that that should be the case! And it wouldn't be the case if we had a progressive minded manager. If we'd given them a proper game and lost, fair enough. But to play how we did is just so frustrating.

This is what I mean when players have to take responsibility. I’m not convinced Southgate told Kane to be a statue and Rice to not bother looking forward. Not directly or explicitly anyway…maybe it’s his dull negative demeanor and vibes which makes players play like this.

Yes, it's generally a package of failure, born out of a stagnant mind set from a very defensive coach... we know very well that these players ordinarily play a different game at their clubs... so it does largely fall on the tactical line fed from the man at the top.

Back to bad old Southgate England tonight. Negative, overly defensive and no pressing of them at all.

Appreciate players have to take responsibility but how we play is down to manager. Just look at Brighton under 3 managers in PL. All about what licence you give players. Finaly under DeZerbi he gave all players licence to go forward and made them believe they could beat anybody. Southgate very much like Moyes where defence comes first. Every chance if Southgate managed City or Arsenal last season they may have done as well but would have scored a lot less goals

Defensive disjointed football that relies on isolated moments of brilliance will normally only take you so far.

It'll flatter to deceive with 'successful' deep runs in tournaments on the quality of the players alone.

But then you meet a team that passes and plays you off the park and normality is restored.

With all the colours available, Southgate's England have been playing in monochrome.

Time for a tactical artist to bring some bold vivid brushstrokes to England's canvas.

Respectfully, that's a different question. And one for later, but hopefully not too much later.

When people say 'but who', it often reads like 'unless you can find someone better that we all agree on, we'd be better off sticking with who we've got'.

Regardless of who this might be, by keeping the same manager who does the same things, England fans will get the same style and outcome.

There are plenty of successful managers at club and international level who are more tactically developed than Southgate.

Frankly speaking, with the football that we've shown all tournament, it's hardly likely to be a gamble whichever elite manager comes in.
