Now the weather is getting colder I am trying to do my bit to help the birds survive winter by feeding them regularly. The trouble is the thieving squirrels who eat everthing I put out. I have bought a squirrel proof nutfeeder, seed dispenser and suet feeder that hang from the tree and are doing a grand job. My problem is that the "squirrel proof" ground feeder that supplies food to birds such as robins is constantly breached by the furry thieves who clean it out in record time. Someone told me to add chilli powder to the nuts as squirrels hate it. To cut a long story short my last attempt again ended in failure.
My recipe started by marinating a bowl of peanuts, overnight in asian chilli oil, a quarter bottle of tabasco sauce and half a jar of out of date chilli pepper pete's "hellish relish". The next morning I added a tablespoon of very hot chilli powder, stirred well and deposited in the ground feeder - see picture 1.
After 1 hour the results can be seen in picture 2 ( I caught the bugger sitting in the cage eating the nuts)
Could it be that I have mexican squirrels?
