The Russians - Playing games with us?

Britain's £67m Typhoons were only put on active standby in July.

Typhoons, the RAF's newest fast jet aircraft - which are based at RAF Coningsby in Lincolnshire - cover the UK Quick Reaction Alert (QRA) commitment together with Tornado F3 aircraft based at RAF Leeming and RAF Leuchars.

The RAF has ordered 144 Typhoons, which can accelerate from standing to take-off in under seven seconds.

funny how a photo of them being operational, makes it into the papers, a month after going operational.

Posturing on both sides. It's like a game of willy battles in the shower.

A friend of mine used to live near an RAF base in Scotland. She said it was a frequent occurrence for the jets to b scrambled because the Russians were approaching, just turning back in time before the British jets could shadow them. The end of the Cold War never really stopped that.

The piss-taking, 'let's see how good the reactions of the RAF are' is like a bit like a return to the Cold War, and where did that get us? Michael Caine in horn-rimmed glasses playing Harry Palmer - that's where.

There are at least 2 typhoons up there over the east coast all the time 24/7
according to one of the pilots who flew one over Eastbourne last weekend

The Russians believe that the United States has used the freeing of eastern Europe to move their assets closer to the Russian border, and pose a threat to Russian territorial integrity.

They are,of course, correct in the former, and to avoid the latter they have returned to these cold war bomber runs to show that they are not to be messed with. And after all, they did unilaterally suspend these operations some years ago.

As for the trust of Putin.........well,he is a politician. And,to be frank,I trust Bush rather less.
