BBC News - Pope deplores 'sex abuse' raids by Belgian police

What is it with the Pope. As a cardinal he did his level best to cover up abuse and now he is still at it now he is at the top of his church.

Fair play to the Belgium Police. Makes common sense to me that when you know the church are investigating allegations, then it saves time if you take the computers from those carrying out the investigations. Afterall, the catholic church have a history in this area of

a) Protecting abusers.
b) Silencing those that have been abused.
c) Not co-operating fully with the Police.

The sooner we see the abusers in jail the better.

How many bishops have been outed by internal investigations? I guess the local old bill got fed up waiting for them to come clean and decided to speed things up.
The Catholic church has got to stop thinking they are above the law and that they are doing gods work by covering up this abuse, even though he apparently works in strange ways, they say.

Am I alone in thinking that by allowing priests to marry the problem would be very much reduced, I read a couple of years ago that the reason for the ban was introduced to save costs of family groups, it would be a positive move and must be worth a try.

I'm not a Catholic so may have this completely wrong but I believe the vow of celibacy is a bit more fundamental than that. Something to do with mirroring the life of Christ with regard to sexual abstinence.

It came to a head recently when the Pope was visiting Germany and when checking into his hotel, the concierge asked the Pontiff if, apart from a copy of the Catholic Herald, The Times and a 6 o'clock alarm call, there was anyhting else.

The Pope replied "Yes - there is one thing. The porn channel in my hotel room - is it disabled?"

The concierge answered "Oh, sorry, no - we've just got the normal stuff".

That's a true story, apparently.

The pope might be more "real world" if he did deal with concierges etc, but I think you'll find minions handle those kinds of details, and that is probably part of the problem.

Are you saying that's not a true story?

and are you really trying to make a crap joke have some kind of relevance to this sorry tale? You are aware aren't you, that the Pope wasn't always the Pope? He probably had a fairly typical life up until he was made Pontiff - join the Hitler Youth as a nipper, a lead role as the baddie in Star Wars and then working as Gary Glitter's wing man. Seems quite "real world" to me.

Don't be stupid Buzzer, the Pope is chosen by God from birth so any experiences he has during his life is to prepare him for his role as Pontif. So anything you my consider a bit dodgy was all planned, OK?
He works in strange ways, as i said earlier.

I know a joke about that too. You move your arms about like Kate Bush and say in a deep voice "BLESS YOU". Then you can say to the person you're telling this to "what's that?"

They say "dunno"

You say "God moving in mysterious ways".

It's more of a visual gag, to be honest.

No, I'm saying it is a joke with some truth behind it. He has been at the higher echilons of the Catholic church for a long time (that would not be a "fairly typical life", trust me), and when you have people doing things for you all the time, you lose touch with the "real world". Just ask a politician (but he'll lie).

Surely it can't be long before the world as a collective decides it will no longer tolerate this malevolent organisation to exist?
Even without their constant efforts to cover up child physical and sexual abuse there are the millions of pounds they pour into wilfully decieving Africans about AIDS prevention, and the millions of pounds they pour into supressing the rights of people simply because of their sexuality. These are clearly evil acts.

Silet bob, maybe you should remain silent for a while, I'm not sure the world is ready for this yet, true as it is.

When any empire falls, the world needs a new one to replace it or chaos reins. The present orderish of the world only exists because the British empire had a relatively smooth handover to the American empire.
If Rome falls, millions will be without an organised western religion and that just will not do.

You need to read before you make silly statements like that.

Uganda is one of the only African populations where it has a Catholic majority. It's also one of the best examples of an African nation reducing the incidence of AIDS.

Why? they followed the ABC principle.

The approach used in Uganda has been named the ABC approach - firstly, encouraging sexual Abstinence until marriage; secondly, advising those who are sexually active to Be faithful to one partner; and finally, urging Condom use, especially for those who have more than one sexual partner.

The Catholic Church was part of this approach being devised and thus it DOES support using condoms if you cant follow the first two principles of the mantra.

HIV AIDS in Uganda

And now science is confirming that the ABC philosophy is the best way to fight AIDS..

Edward C. Green, director of the AIDS Prevention Research Project, Harvard Centre for Population and Development Studies, said that 'the evidence confirms the Pope is correct in his assessment that condom distribution exacerbates the problem of AIDS. Or to put it a better way, the best evidence we have supports the Pope's comments.'

The Harvard AIDS Project's webpage on Dr Green lists his book Rethinking AIDS Prevention: Learning from Successes in Developing Countries. Green reveals: 'The largely medical solutions funded by major donors have had little impact in Africa, the continent hardest hit by AIDS. Instead, relatively simple, low-cost behavioural change programs - stressing increased monogamy and delayed sexual activity for young people - have made the greatest headway in fighting or preventing the disease's spread.'

This guy knows more about this subject than you do.

So what was that you were saying about deception?

Seems you're being deceiving.

It certainly is interesting to think what would happen if the people of Africa followed the Catholic teaching of keeping sex within marriage. Seems to be that would limit the spread of HIV better than any use of condoms.
