Sir Mickey of Adams.

Going to see Leicester on Saturday at the Blue Camp against City in the third round of the FA Cup and will be cheering him and Paul Brooker.

Honourable mentions for

Peter Taylor I (for signing Peter Ward)
Mike Bailey (fifth in the equivalent of the Premiership!!!!!!!!!)
Chris Cattlin (for signing Frank Worthington and Hans Kraay)
Steve Gritt (for saving us)
Mullery (for signing Mark Lawrenson and Fozzie)
Barry Lloyd (Garry Nelson, Wembley......90 minutes from the Premiership, will it happen again in my lifetime??)

Its simply got to be Adams. This club was an absolute joke when he took over, the team was a shabby bunch of motley has-beens and never-gonna-be's who had dragged us down to the bottom of the entire League. After only one full season in charge, when we finished comfortably in the top half of the table, the team Adams assembled from scratch won back-to-back Championships. It took him just over a year.

Given the circumstances, that makes Adams the finest manager in our history by an absolute mile IMHO.

Gritt 2nd.

Alan Mullery . took us from 3rd Division to top division in 3 years.

Micky adams could have equalled the 2 promotions but wouldn't hang around

It's worth noting that Lawrenson and Williams came to Brighton together and played under Mullery, but were discovered by the scouting program of Brian Clough and Peter Taylor . Apparently, the scouts stayed at Brighton when Clough buggered off just like coppell did, for 'big dosh'.

Has to be Mullery, from 3rd to 1st division in 3 years has yet to be bettered. Unfortunately Mickeys achievements were at a lower level. Now if he'd stayed...........

Mullery

From speaking to a lot of the players from his days it's clear that he did a lot more than simply "holding Peter Taylor's team together".

The players involved in those promotion years give him ALL the credit - and not Taylor ... after 25 years they owe him no loyalty either

Respect to gim ... even more so for the V'sign and the "you're not worth this much" stuff :)

Mullery ? No way, with the budget he had I could have got us into the top flight. I would say Mickey Adams.

Both Mickey Adams and Peter Taylor 1 took over teams in a mess and put in place the foundations for a ascent to levels which would have been barely imaginable when they arrived. Taylor's style has been criticised but you can't argue with his results. They would be my top 2 followed by Mullery and Cattlin.

Has to be Mullery and to deride him with having a large budget is well clear of the mark ! Lawrenson/Williams for 130,000 and Fozzie for a lot less were incredible bargains. He slipped only up by paying a lot for Maybank but covered that with stealing a replacement in Clarke. A manager who cared enough for us to require a police escort from the pitch.

Gritt/Horton/BOTH Taylors and of course Adams should also be remembered fondly.

In 1977 £130000 was a lot of money for any club let alone a Second Division side for two players. How about the £220000 he spent on Teddy Maybank (bought from Fulham to help prevent them going bust) and the £100000 he paid Cardiff for the near useless Petere Sayer ?

Mullery's nasty habit of publically slagging off players won him few friends on or off the pitch. Remember, in his second stint here, with no money he did nothing (as he did with all the other clubs he managed, including Palarse).

Agreed with everything else as well as most of your other posts EP but Sir Bazza of Ashtray? Are you having a f***ing tin bath? We qualified for the playoffs with a negative goal difference, were humiliated at Wembley by the worst side ever to grace the top flight and then promptly dissappeared from view faster than you could say "Worthing". The bloke's never been hired by another team and never will be and you only have to read Garry Nelson's books to find out why.
