Proper rivalry in those days, Brutus Gold, tank tops, scarves r'and the wrists, sideburns you could fry an egg on, Hai Karate aftershave, wanking over Leslie Judd when Blue Peter was on, Slade, giving Palace a slap (and taking one too, but no whining to the OB), three day week, impressing a bird with a Mark III Escort, blackjacks and fruit salads. God I miss those days.

Hello boys. back again to reply to the comments made after I started this thread.

Birdman & Returnoftherev. I knew nothing about the 73 troubles at a friendly pre season. (not that friendly then). Guess that was why when the Palace came down to Brighton in 74 they were there in numbers and looking for trouble. OB did not expect so many Palace fans to be there and the hostility was there on both sides.

LukeOwen. Yep that was the video clip I was reffering to. I did say fair play to you Brighton lads because lets face it the Palace bloke was on his own and was hardly looking for trouble and did not look like he was capable of giving it anyway. Take my hat of to your lot.

Justice. I did say that I hoped if it was the other way around and if it was a Brighton fan our lot would have done the same thing and just given the lad banter.

You say you witnesed a Brighton fan getting it from Palace fans a few weeks ago in London. Keeping it real here. Dont know as I was not there. But could the Brighton fan have been giving it large and bit off more than he could chew. Happens mate on both sides. not saying its right but that it happens. If it was a case of taking a kicking just because he was wearing a Brighton scarf then yep that is not right.

Look. The Brighton/Palace rivalry is a bit special and its still there. Charlton try to make out there is a rivalry between them and us but to be honest most of us dont even care about Charlton. Millwall in the 70s/80s did take the piss big time at Sellhurst but then they took the piss at every ground they went to. It was just a lot easier for them at our place because they were so close to us. CCTV is everywhere now and you will be looking at doing time these days when and not if you get caught. Look at your own boys from the Brighton v Leeds game and Palace v Charlton game. If this had happend in a night club and not classed as football related then a fine would have been the order of the day.

Pompey are not your rivals. You dont even come under their radar. Southampton are their rivals. Brighton is just an away day jolly for them.

Wigman. Glad you agree that Palace were in the Brighton end that day.

Seagullsovergrimsby. yes mate back then it was a case of sticking up for your mates and anyone wearing the same colours as you.

Pastafarian. Read the whole post again mate as I did say I was 14 at the time and yes it was fun running onto the pitch with hundreds of others. Guess I must be easily amused then. what were you doing for fun at that age (reading the beano)

Superbez. you must be the spelling MONG of this forum. Dont worry though as we even have some on the Holmesdale site. Did you read the post or just go through it looking for spelling mistakes. You have made yourself look a right tool. Feel free to check for some more mistakes as I am sure you will. speeling mong (oops made another one)

Been interesting on here and learnt a few things

Hope you have a rotten rest of the season (banter intended)

All the best

I have always been puzzled at how the rivalry between the two clubs took off so quickly in the 70's. As we entered the decade Palace were a top division side and BHA were languishing in the old third division. There was no animosity between the clubs and barely a sideways glance. And yet within 2-3 years it was daggers drawn.
Older Palace fans ( 50/60 yr olds ) have always maintained that their historic and natural rivals were Millwall. If this was the case, how did they allow the new, younger generation to hi-jack their real rivals and turn their attentions to BHA. Was it apathy or did events just happen so quickly that it was too far gone before they realised what was happening?
Were there other reasons for the start of it all, other than the obvious Mullery/Venables catalyst. Two young ambitious first-time managers, former team-mates who disliked each other. The clubs suddenly meeting again, after a longish gap, and then meeting regularly on an upward collision course. Sharing divisions and promotions.
Or were there other factors as well. Did the younger Palace fans find Brighton more appealing than Peckham, Bermondsey and New Cross. They could travel down on the Friday, wreak a bit of havoc and sleep on the beach. Wreak more havoc at the game and then have the Saturday night to look forward to. More fun, better scenery, more things to do, better crack etc.
In the 70's there were 4 clubs whose fans you avoided like the plague. Leeds, Cardiff, Hull and Millwall. No young Palace fan in his right mind would have wanted Millwall as main rivals. It would be like signing your own death warrant. The old dockers in their 40's/50's and 60's were all up for a scrap as much if not more than any Millwall youngster.
When Millwall realised that Palace had ' flown the nest ' they turned their attentions to West Ham and the rest is history.

You are right there Mo
Millwall was a horrible place to go to. Deptford and Peckham did not and still has not got an appeal to it. I went to Millwall plenty of times sometimes to watch Millwall as I could not get to the Palace away games. Brighton was a much better away weekend. You could like you say get down there on a Friday night and go clubbing then off to the game on the Saturday and then back down clubbing for the Saturday. None of this must have a ticket lark. Pay on the day and have a weekend of fun.
Now unless you have a season ticket and have been to loads of away games there is no way that you will get in now.
Shame really. Would love to come down to the Amex but looks like there is no way that I could get a ticket. If it was open doors then we would bring thousands down there. No doubt you would do the same at Palace.
Funny thing is I have not got a problem with giving your lot the whole of the Arthur for you to play in but I dont make the rules. Would rather see Brighton fans there than empty seats to keep the peace. Thats just the way it is.
Thought your chant about You burnt your town down was funny and did make me laugh.

I think the 70's produced mobs of 800+ and fighting at selhurst, norwood, and thornton after the game, never quite reached those peaks again, biggest aggro days were not boxing day games tbh.???

I'm sure you're right, I was a bit too young for the 70's stuff. However, I clearly recall three trips to Palace in the 80's that involved stabbings, mass brawls in and around the ground, coaches being bricked, getting a face full of coins, terracing being ripped up and thrown into the home end, buckets being filled with piss by Palace and lobbed into the away end, running fights with fans and police, Lancing boys fighting police and their dogs in the seats before jumping down into the Palace terracing to fight them. That was plenty 'tasty' enough for me.

Yes mate, both.
Glad to hear you lot keeping it real. None of this billy big bollocks. Heard a lot of crap over the years about things at football that just did not happen. It was just a fishing story that got bigger and bigger and spread by people who wasnt even there.

Sorry Jo
cant remember anyone getting through the turnstiles carrying buckets.
And that must have been one hell off a piss to fill one. :lolol:

It was one of the more 'amusing' moments. Feck knows where your boys got the big black plastic dustbin from, but they did a fair job of trying to fill it.

80's was lively but for sheer numbers and escalation the 70's was the worst time imo:rolleyes:

I tend to agree.... more big scale brawls.....77-80...... 80's were nasty but.. the old bill had more intention....so arrest was more likely, hence the smaller fracas.
