Seeing as their seems to be so many committed and knowledgeable musos on this board (plus a few twazzocks who have absolutely no idea), I thought perhaps a discussion of the best Yank band might be in order.

I reckon we should allow solo artists too otherwise you have to exclude perhaps two of the WORLD's all time greatest: Dylan and Neil Young.

My top 3 would be as follows:

1. Bob Dylan (& The Band) - beyond reproach.
2. Neil Young - cool as.
3. The Pixies - gutted I missed their recent reunion tour due to living in the depths of Central America.

Keep on Rocking in the Free World!!!

When I said "American", I meant the continent of America. It pisses me off how the word has become appropriated by the Yanks as exclusively theres. I live in Honduras and people call themselves "Americanos" here.

Yes, but you did say 'Yank' - it was that which I was correcting!

You yourself seem to be confusing 'American' and 'Yank'.

Considering my music collection has a very strong European bias, I can't really answer that

Weird Al Yankovic is the only American who features heavily in my music collection. The rest are all European. Dunno why...

The Byrds, and all their various incarnations and spin-offs, should pretty much cover it.

Nirvana - Kurt, and the whole grunge scene

Aereosmith and the amount of drugs and great tunes (before they got bland, old & MOR)

Rage Against The Machine - "Fu$k you I won't do what you tell me!" nuff said

Bands:
Sonic Youth
Velvet Underground (although the best member was Welsh!)
Galaxie 500

Fat Badger: you have impeccable taste my friend. Was only listening to Galaxie 500 this morning on my walkman- the cover of New Order's Ceremony- absolutely fantastic. Did you ever get to see them?? Haven't heard the new Youth album - any good??
