Should the Williams brothers be allowed to play womens tennis? *MERGED*

There is a fundemental issue with the williams brothers. Are they cheats or do they have a set of nuts?

I play at Weald but used to do tournaments and things at Pav and Ave. The membership fee at Weald isn't too bad considering its annually but coaching fees are excessive (£80 per month for an individual lesson each week!) and I got to the point where I realised the rate I was improving wasn't worth that sort of money. Also because of the money involved a lot of people you meet on the circuit are sometimes quite unsavoury- arrogant and thinking they have a divine right to win. Much as I enjoy it I can see why others are so dismissive of the sport because of the kind of people playing it and its upper class roots, not being from that background myself I sometimes felt uncomfortable.

And yeah that dress

i played at falmer esporta (back then it was called something else though) as a junior and played in a lot of leagues and did some squads. i quit once i got to the age that i had to pay for coaching myself, and couldnt afford to pay for that and driving lessons. after that i couldnt get back into it, firstly cos my standard and consistancy had dropped so much since i was playing 3 times a week, and i remembered how f**cking awful it was to play against some little shite who would whine and bitch after he lost a point.

im back playing now, thinking about taking level 1 & 2 coaching courses if i cant find a decent grad job

Surely it's the Williams sisters who disprove the theory that you have to come from money to make it in tennis! It's not about money, it's about enthusiasm for the sport, and working and working and working at you game to become the best you can be. It doesn't need to be on manicured lawns at a "special school" as you put it. They have proved that.

Well it does disprove the money thing partly but their father was an adept coach meaning they did not need to pay the fees and he trained them intensively which ended up getting them into the Rick Macci school which is a specialised tennis academy. They are a small exception to the sport being all about money because even if their parents did not pay for it all they had others do it through sponsorship deals they earned so thousands will have spent on their upbringing which it what it takes to get to the top level in tennis.

You cannot question their enthusiasm and desire to win but the way they were taught to play and intimidate opponents in their earlier years seems to have rubbed off on some juniors now days, things like being overly aggressive in the warm-up, glaring, getting too close at the change of ends but they seemed to have toned that down a bit now. Can't help but admire what they've achieved though.

They have upped the game and influenced women for the sport.
So what's not to like?

I prefer that - however pretty and blonde they are - the popular beauties do not get wild-card entries to attract perving salivating gits. Upskirt shots are not what tennis is really about

To be fair what they have done to womens tennis is huge, they have raised the profile of the game immeasurably and taken the game to a whole new target audience. If you have watched Wimbledon over the last decade they have been involved in some classic matches also. Venus's game yesterday was as good as you're likely to see anywhere.

Fair point to a degree, however surely a 40 yo should not be able to give the likes of V/W the run around for the best part of three hours if they were really that good ? Remember Kim/C had two years out to have a baby came back and won a grand slam. I don't think someone at the top of men,s Tennis could ever take a break of that lenght and return to the top ?

no they make me feel sick and they scream like a man everytime they hit the ball very much dislike when there are people like anna kournikova around!

Yes, I would worry that they would scream and hit mine...Next to Sharapova there's no compeition. But I wouldn't throw Wozniacki over the net.

Altogether now (a la Madonna) : "SAL-I-VATE".......

There was a lovely up-skirt shot of Navratilova published in the "Sun" a few years back, she was salivating as she looked up the skirt of a ball-girl...
