What the matter with you ? Gone over to the dark side ? Even though you have the nerve to incinuate that AS400s are actually mainframes (they're oversized minis and you know it) you're old school like me and you used to actually RTFM without feeling like a wimp. That's why IBM manuals have indexes, you read from the back !

I am trying to configure an IBM Ultrium 2 3581 H tape drive to go into sequential/randon mode to access the bar code facility a customer of ours has swiched on his system.

My tape drive is set to normal standalone singe drive and I cannot find in the manual ( 397 pages) what commands you set.

Having slept on the problem, I've concluded you need WD40.
