Team GB to enter a football team for 2012 in London

Presumably the British team will qualify for the final stages only because the 2012 games are being held in London.

For the Beijing games, UEFA used the 2007 European U-21 Championships as the qualifying tournament for the Olympics, with the four semi-finalists qualifying. Because England was one of those four teams, a vacancy arose, which was settle by a play-off between Italy and Portugal.

Incidentally ... what would have been wrong about the English team representing Great Britain at Beijing? They qualified, in a competition that Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland entered. Playing at the Olympics wouldn't have compromised the national identities of the four 'home' football associations.

not impressed that the major talking points about 2012 seem to be the money, and whether we will put a football team in. The Olympics are about so much more than that and i hope all this petty talking stops and we concentrate on training to get medals especially those all important gold

Don't follow your logic there. If anything, the Euro team will be full of the old guard as the youngsters may be saved for the Olympics.

Yeah scrub that, it will be qualifying for the World Cup in 2014 that should benefit
