With the short pre-season the squad players need game time, so:

Sanchez

Yapi
Roberts
Veltman
Burn
Bernardo

Stephens
Molumby
Gross

Ally Mac
U-23 striker

That team should be plenty good enough to beat Pompey.

What debacle!? What backlash!? We played a very young side who got great experience who very nearly got a result. I saw that as extremely positive! Seriously, why was that a debacle!?

Just because we made little effort to win cup games

Just because we made little effort to win cup games

Injuries, sickness lack of cover all contributed and we had Chelsea away on the Saturday. We played a much stronger team against Sheffield Wednesday in the FA Cup. Same outcome

I was part of the Backlash, meant to bring them through carefully not field them all at the same time against a Prem side. They did play well and considering what the same Villa team did to Liverpool's kids they were very good. However, I enjoy a cup run and we're never gonna win the prem so domestic cups are our only chance at winning honours unless we drop down a division we're not gonna get a league title or promotion trophy.

Hope we have more of a go at both cup competitions this time around.

Totally agree. I really enjoyed that game and it was good to see the youngsters get experience against a pretty strong Villa side.

a galaxy far far away
The selection will tell us something about the status of ...... MacAllister, Gyokeres, Propper.

Also about the relative seniority of some the u23s, ie who is ahead out of Dendonker or Roberts

Are any u23s possibly in line for senior football this year? eg, Cochrane

Hopefully we'll play a formation which allows us to win a game.

Sanchez
Veltman White Burn Bernardo
Stephens Propper
Jahanbakhsh Mac Allister Gwargis
Maupay

Maupay needs to get off the mark as he's our goal threat. Put Ali J in the window if we're still keen to sell, same with Bernardo. Peter Gwargis is going to be a first team player by the end of the season so we might as well blood him now. Alexis Mac needs to play as a number 10, rather than some ill defined, float about kind of a role.

I think Baluta, Molumby and Gyökeres are likely to start. Maybe Ali J as well.
We have heard nothing about Băluţă for a long time.

Something isn't right ?

Anyway, my guess :

Steele

Veltman
Roberts
Burn
Bernardo

Stephens
Molumby
Pröpper / Sanders

Jahanbakhsh
Gyökeres
Mac Allister

Its not that long ago we were at Wembley for the FA Cup semi and Old Trafford for the League Cup quarters,

Our one and only time in a League Cup quarter final was in the 1978/79 season. We’ve only got to the 4th round twice since 1980. Think you mean the FA Cup quarter final at Old Trafford.

We should put out a team good enough to beat Portsmouth tomorrow. Should get some good minutes into the fringe players and then can do the same with Preston away. We can do well this year.

The U23s have a game against Arsenal U23s on Friday, so don’t think we’ll use many of them.

Potter in his press conference just then pretty much confirmed the line up for Pompey was going to be the rest of the first team squad -to give them game time.
So expect only a couple of u23s . (Roberts, Sanders, Cochrane etc )
