Am sure I ma being stupid but when I click through on the AVG link all the products seem to cost cold haerd cash - how do you get the freebie version?

Download the trial, take it off in 30 days and start again, thats what I was planning on doing anyway.

I'm giving Avast a go now, thanks for the suggestion.

It's really good. It even installs a little man who tells you when he has updated the virus database.

I've never had any problems over the last 4 years with Norton. You must be doing something wrong:dunce:

Theres always an exception to the rule, but in 95% of cases, Norton just fucks the users computer up. It is the cancer of computing.

Tell me, how many times have you had to restore Windows 98/ME machines which are no longer capable of booting due to Norton?

How many times have you had to deal with computers where the user can't get on the internet due to Norton?

How many times have you had to rescue files that Norton has taken a disliking to and "protected"?

How many times have you had to resort to specialist tools to remove Norton due to its hanging-on-for-dear-life tactics?

If each of those comes in below "ten"; you don't know what you're talking about. Its the first programme I remove from someones machine when they get me to fix it (well, actually, WinFixer is, but its less commonly installed)l.

Anyone know how to uninstall the shit that is Norton?

Go on to Symantecs site and search for "SymNRT" (if its a recent version in the first place)

If that fails, its safe mode and registry editing for you...

Seriously? I can't just uninstall it like most normal programmes?

You can try. It usually fails.

By "usually", I mean I've had it work a massive total of once...

Whats bloody annoying is that the removal tool installs LiveUpdate which you then have to uninstall again

I can't even find a reference to SymNRT on their website

Have seen lots of references to problematic removal of the software on the net. This link seems to be easy-ish to understand, but to be honest, I'm scared to death of tinkering manually with the register, cos I do seem to be blessed with the kiss of death for all things electronic :dunce:

Does this site seem ok to you?

Cheers MYOB

You obvious deal at the lower end of the market if these are the sort of issues you have to face. Good luck, I'm sure there is good money to be made out of fools and their computers.

...which is exactly the market that goes and buys Norton because they "know the name" and because they think they need it, and need to pay for what it claims to do.

It is a complete heap of crap - it doesn't do its job properly, it comes close to holding you to ransom when its trial expires, its nigh on impossible to remove, and it fucks up more than it comes close to fixing.

And every single version has got worse since Symantec took over. In 1994, I believe.

As goes the removal tool, it appears to have been renamed the "Norton uninstall tool", and theres docs on it here: http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPOR...6&nsf=tsgeninfo.nsf&view=docid&dtype=&prod=&v
