Not being much of a cricket fan, could someone tell me how this current Sussex side compares with the one that won the league a couple of years back? Seems to me this ones better(based on it's performances in the one day games aswell as the 4 days). Much obliged.

Without Rana we are probably about the same but when we have a fully fit Rana steaming in from the Cromwell road is a site to be seen and with him we are a much better side. That is not meant to sound rude to the other players as we have a terrific team without Rana it is just that with him we can beat anyone.

I take it he's a fast bowler then. Is the other guy - mushywhatshisname- a fast bowler? Do they work as a devilish team?

Mushy (mushtaq ahmed) = spinner
Rana = VERY fast bowler.

Both at each end is an IMMENSE sight

Are they both pakistani's? Do they play for the national team(whatever their country may be)?

Yes to your first question. Mushy has semi retired from internationals as he is geting on a bit but is still our Sultan of Swing. Rana was supposed to be bowling England out but has got a groin injury that has ruled him out for the series. His replacement for Sussex is fellow Pakistani Yasser Arafat ( No not that one ) who was overlooked for the current tour. not a bad little player but has a long way to go to be in the same league as Rana.

Gaffer, when we let them get away a bit at the end of their first innings, was Mustard flashing the old willow?

Yeah for a time he looked good. Was the only Durham player to show any fight. Got the feeling the Durham team would sooner have been on the beach!

 It sounded like that, although we were all left a little confused by what was going on, as the thread will show.

Durham 503/3 etc. etc.

Very bizarre.

Keep going! It seems that every time you see us play, we are world beaters!

Sussex push for big win

Mushtaq Ahmed and Jason Lewry bowled Sussex into position to push for a wide-margin victory over hapless Durham at Hove.

The visitors’ middle order surrendered to Mushtaq (5-64) - scourge of Durham in his team’s two-day victory at Riverside earlier this season - and Lewry (4-55) happily cashed in too.

After Chris Adams had plundered a season’s best 155 in a match-controlling total of 531 for six declared, Sussex were already well-placed at lunch.

But when Durham folded for a tame 150 all out and found themselves following-on long before stumps on day two, the 2003 county champions could sense the maximum-points
win they need to keep the pressure on Liverpool Victoria Division One leaders Lancashire.

While much of the country was beset by heavy rain, Sussex merely had to dodge a couple of showers first thing on an otherwise sunny day which lost only one over to the elements and finished with Durham 42 for two second time round - still 339 runs short of making their opponents bat again.

Mushtaq, back in harness and evidently recovered after a week’s rest in Pakistan from the assortment of wear-and-tear injuries which had recently compromised his effectiveness, was brought into the attack at 37 for one in the 13th over.

Durham had lost opener James Lowe for his second first-ball duck in as many innings - non-plussed by a decent delivery from Yasir Arafat which beat the outside edge and flattened off-stump.

It ought to have been two for two soon afterwards when Jimmy Maher nicked Lewry to slip - where Michael Yardy put down a regulation chance.

An encouraging second-wicket stand of 53 between Maher and Gordon Muchall promised lasting resistance - until the young number three fell to a special piece of bowling, done in the air and losing his off bail to a perfectly delivered Mushtaq leg-break.

There was less mitigation for Maher, who steered a cut for an easy catch by Adams at slip - before two more batsmen quickly proved no match for the Pakistani.

Dale Benkenstein got no stride in and was pinned lbw as Mushtaq ran through his variations; then Ben Harmison very nearly stranded himself on the beach as he charged towards the seafront, missed his attempted big hit and could only hang his head in embarrassment as he was stumped by yards.

Phil Mustard (58) provided the only note of defiance as he clumped 10 boundaries in a 60-ball half-century to dominate a brisk ninth-wicket stand of 56 with Moneeb Iqbal.

Before then, though, Lewry - deserving of better than he got with the new ball - returned to swing the older one through the defences of Gareth Breese and Callum Thorp just before tea.

The evening session began with Graham Onions giving Mushtaq another wicket - via an aerial drive to cover - before Mustard and Moneeb at least made Sussex work a little harder until the wicket-keeper-batsman mistimed a drive to deep mid-on.

There were still 16 overs to survive when Durham batted again - and although Lowe avoided a third successive first-baller, he soon succumbed lbw to Arafat.

Muchall once again looked the part alongside Maher until he was fooled again by Mushtaq - lbw on the front foot to what became the last ball of the day and becoming 1,250th first-class victim of his tormentor’s illustrious career.

It was all a world away from Sussex’s free-scoring first session, Adams finishing with 21 fours and two sixes from 238 balls.

After a cautious start from an overnight 364 for four, the captain and his sixth-wicket partner Robin Martin-Jenkins stepped on the gas in a century stand which came up in only 21 overs and claimed young leg-spinner Iqbal as its principal victim.

Durham’s only successes came when Thorp had Matt Prior driving too early and checking back a routine return catch and when Adams finally holed out in the deep off Breese.

Martin-Jenkins, dropped by Thorp at mid-wicket on 13 off an Iqbal full toss, was joined by Arafat as another 49 runs were raided in only six overs.

By stumps, such greediness seemed entirely unwarranted against opponents whose only feasible route to anything but an innings defeat appears to lie in a still uncertain weather forecast.

PS The wicket of Muchall was Mushy's 1250th first class wicket.
