a free hit is one in which the batsmen cannot be out off the delivery that is bowled under the free hit signal. a free hit is awarded when the bowler oversteps the crease and therefore bowls a 'no ball'.

Only happens in 1-dayers when the bowler delivers a no-ball, you get another delivery which you cannot be dismissed off (except for a stumping) so most batsmen set themselves up to get a boundary.
