He's been a main event talent in TNA for a few years now, held the World Title 3 times if I remember right and feuded with Kurt Angle et al.
Apparently his contract is up there and WWE are making a very concerted effort to get him back, which suggests they see him being right in the big picture (assuming he accepts the contract).
