I watched only the second part last night, and the one thing that left me astounded was the implication that the death toll from the eruption, be that thr pyroclastic flows or the ash cloud would be huge.
However, they failed to follow up the implications of the drop in world-wide temperatures of say 15C, and snow on the ground in most of the northern hemisphere for the next 3 years or so.

Now, call me picky, but how the f*** would humanity survive in our current structure with the loss of crops/livestock caused by a permanant winter of 3-4 years.

IMO, the death toll from this would dwarf that from the direct causes of the eruption. Perhaps I missed something.

That's 'cos they don't really know. It's all guesswork based on events that happend hundreds of thousands of years ago

I surpose a lot of people would say serves america right, they are the chief polluters of the world so is it not unfair that the world will one day wipe them out.

I only saw the second one, but thought it was ok.

The thing is, though, give a shit. It's all natural bloody selection and so we probably will all get wiped out. That's what these supervolcanos / meteor impacts etc are designed to do. Life starts afresh, as it has repeatedly done over the last billion or so years.

What I want to know is that if we are all wiped out and the human race becomes (almost) extinct, what'll happen then? Revenge of the earthworms? Will the few human survivors revert back to trogladytic times? No medicine, no anything. A new Sir Clive will be needed to re-invent the Spectrum.

Why is it that "super" is still an acceptable prefix when attempting to add gravity, power or menace behind something? "Super" implies to me that something is rather nice and pleasant. "How are the scones, darling?" "Oh, they're super!"

"Mental" or "bloodcurdling" would be far more appropriate.

The second part just didn't live up to expectations. Although at least we were saved from some of the more predictable ingredients that go with American disaster movies:

1. The President didn't heroically fly a fighter plane into the epicentre of the volcano in order to drop water on it and thus save the Free World.

2. As an ashen sun struggled to rise over an apocalyptic landscape nobody had the first post-volcanic baby. Which would have been called Liberty.

I thought the acting in the bunker with the two specialists and the sad corporal was really quite poor. Almost, dare I say it, of soap standard!
