Indeed. There are many things that are irrelevant to all things Albion. The tsunami, Ken Livingstone, Easy10's film thread. Does that mean we should ignore any news-worthy event because it isn't albion related? Here's a simple solution. Close the thread and don't come back.

I think you're forgetting about last season. Gerrard WAS Liverpool.

I think Gerrard's a marginally better player than Alonso, but with his mind elsewhere now, perhaps Alonso is more of an asset to the team.

We'll only really see in the big European games (presuming Liverpool progress), where Gerrard tends to come good - remember Olympiakos. Gerrard's poorer performances have generally been against the smaller sides this season.
Last season he was Liverpool, but he's not any more. Now they've got a good manager they're building a team rather than Houllier's tactic of pass it to Gerrard and cross your fingers.
Against Olympiakos Gerrard was invisible most of the game, Mellor and Sinama-Pongolle were behind the comeback more than he was. But he hit that goal and so everyone forgot the rest of the match.

if Gerrard wasnt the "Man" as you say...why are teams going to pay 30m for him....

He is Liverpool......

He was awesome against Olympiakos covered every blade of grass for the cause.

They wouldnt be in the Carling Cup Final this sunday without him.....

And u cant say Alonso is nothing compared to Gerrard.

He is as close to a 1 man team then any othere team has been over the past few years.

Poor bastard he's obviously on a pittance moneywise and why should he care after all he's only a scouser playing for a scouse team

Be nice to see him stay loyal to Liverpool rather than run off to be a squad player at Chelsea or Madrid. f*** Sake he does play for a pretty reasonable team already or is every decent player going to end up at United, Chelsea or Madrid??

Because he very easily could be, playing with Makalele would allow him to. And it wasn't me who put it that way, it was Gerrard :)

In other words he ran around a lot and didn't affect the game in any way. But with Alonso playing he doesn't do it making him far more effective

Liverpool have won a higher percentage of their games this season without Gerrard in the side than with. And lost a lower percentage. When he's not in the team, they score, on average, more than half-a-goal a game more, while picking up a higher average of Premiership points per match. Luis Garcia has a better goals-to-shots ratio than your hero. And as for which Liverpool player is highest up the Opta rankings? XABI ALONSO.

In the run up to Christmas, with Xabi Alonso pulling the strings from deep and allowing Gerrard to concentrate simply on attack, Liverpool were beginning to be a proper footballing side for the first time in years. But since Alonso was injured by Lampard, they've relied on Gerrard as their playmaker. There have been a couple of reasonable results - and plenty of overly-ambitious shots and passes sprayed into touch - but not one truly good performance since.

These are facts........

At the beginning of the season Liverpool played G.A.K in the qualifier for the champ league.

Liverpool won 2-0 goals from Gerrard.....the second leg was 1-0 to G.A.K.

So he got Liverpool into the group stages anyway.

He then scores the goal and was MOM against olympiakos to get them through to the knockout stages of the champ league.

Not to mention when he got Liverpool into this sundays carling cup final with a goal in each leg of the semi...... 2 games in which Liverpool were awful and he stood up to be counted again.

Plus his four premiership goals to date and all in games when Liverpool have not lost.

In fact he hasnt scored in a game where liverpool have lost this season....

Plus he got in the champ league then carried them through to the knockouts and has given the supporters the only chance of a trophy this year with his semi final goals..........

Not to shabby....... Have not seen a player to be so crucial to a team for at least 10 years.........

I'm not saying Gerrard isn't imprtant or isn't a good player, but when Alonso plays Gerrard and Liverpool play infinitely better.

I agree OPTA is generally a load of shit, but the rest of that can't be ignored.

How about this:
Liverpool have won a higher percentage of their games this season without Gerrard in the side than with. And lost a lower percentage.

do you have any comeback to that?

percenatges who cares.........

Know one judges the players on percentages....

Fans judge on what they see.

And what the liverpool fans know is they wouldnt be in the champions league without him..

And they wouldnt be in the carling cup final without him....

And Alonso has not played as many games as Gerrard due to injury so you cant get a fair reflection until they play the same amount of games......

Then you can get your bloody opta index and percentages out.

It's the same for last season as well. The independent compared the games man u, liverpool and arsenal with and without keane gerrard and viera respectively. both man u and arsenal won about 10% more with keane and viera than without whereas liverpool won about 10% more without gerrard.

he's a brilliant player but is vastly overated. he tries to hard and wastes a lot of possession and opportunities by his obsession with having to overcomplicate and do everything himself
