I can't believe how bothered some people get about pre-season friendlies, particularly ones we've lost.

They make absolutely no difference to the forthcoming season whatsoever, history is littered with teams who've lost more than they've won but gone on to have good seasons, or been red hot in July but crap once the proper action starts.

They're about getting fit, and trying out new things. To analyse them any deeper than that is a complete waste of time.

Sounds like the club treated the game as a training session.

I think that's the general idea with pre-season friendlies tho isn't it? It's an extended training session with a bit of added bite in that you're playing against proper opponents who will try and make things awkward for you.
