Depends what the fine was for.

being caught travelling without my season ticket - yep, success - but you'll need to produce the ticket to prove it

Got done for sitting in first class once. Refused to pay the on the spot fine, stating that the train was running with 33% less carriages. Got a letter threatening to take take me court, produced a photo of the overcrowded train and explained a bit about health & safety etc, little bit more bullshit, gave them my solicitors details to send any further communication. My incident happened in October, not heard anything since! Sent all letters recorded delivery!
