I have been trying to remember the name of that Lenny Henry vehicle for ages. Cheers meado.

You've shared a seed of my loss of memory. I had to look up what it was called today. I have many pictures in my head, but the majority remained unnamed. A whitened Lenny Henry was one of them.

Potion of Love - The Ambers
A Little More Love - Kim Weston

Pevenseagull - bloody good shout with that William Bell track

"Dark end of the street"

James Carr did the definitive version IMHO
The song's writer, Dan Penn, also did a great version.

There have also been other versions, the one by the Commitments being particularly dreadful!

"To love somebody" written by those well known soul singers (?) the BeeGees has also spawned many good covers (James Carr again is one).

....Otherwise pretty much anything on Stax with the exception of Lena Zavaroni!

A Change is Gonna Come by Baby Huey is also amazing

Don't know that version, but the same song by Otis is one of my favourites. Listen to it when depressed though and it could have you running for the knife draw.

In the 1980s, and probably about a decade afterwards, i really didn't like Stevie Wonder. He was a representative of a moustachioed, wife-loving Richie era and of songs concerning love and telephonics, his large round head an inflated ball of bruises with piano chord hair draping gleefully all over. Then, probably when i grew and music hit different parts, his funkoid soul and political influences held a much greater story, gave some tragic drift to the 70s i hadn't lived in and demurely discredited. Gave the music some real bloody heart, and tore mine apart at times. Being into hardcore UK hip-hop, grunge, punk, alt.country and alt.anything, it was all a bit shameful for me at admit to, i suppose.

Stevie Wonder in that period warms my imaginary soul most. If i could even imagine i had an imaginary one in a time i didn't yet exist.

There is a fair bit of Tamla Motown creeping into this thread...not sure it's soul music???

The best version of A Change is Gonna Come is the original by Sam Cooke .
