Peter Bottomley Conservative MP for Worthing West

2007-08
Total expenses £126,603
of which second
home allowance £23,083

Claim: The Worthing West MP claimed £6,000 for replacement windows and £980 for bookshelves in 2004, the Daily Telegraph said. He was warned by the fees office that the latter claim could be seen as excessive.

Response: Mr Bottomley told his local newspaper that almost "anything in or out of context can look absurd". The windows had been rotten and it was not clear whether the £980 had been paid, Mr Bottomley added. He said the mortgage on his London home was almost paid off, so there would be no interest charges in the next financial year.

Seemingly £915 a month on rent contributions. I would assume that is her office? Nothing too seedy on old Kramer. Spends a lot of time on the phone though - personal calls are not filtered out.

Looking through his PDF of claims, I noticed that he purchased a magazine called Attitude...now, I know of his sexuality, but can a gay lifestyle magazine really be of importance to do his job..?????

The limit for 2nd home allowance is £24,000 a year.
Not sure why £23,083 keeps cropping up. There must be a reason, perhaps thats just where they can safely "max out" at - get to just within a grand of the limit might be the advice from the Expenses committee.

4%
Possibly some element of tax?
Very unlikely to be coincidental

approx 3.9% increase on £23,083 gives £24,000, in line with RPI earlier this year

I reckon the £24,000 being a round number is just a coincidence and that the 140+ MPs that were claiming £23,083 were just maxing it out

Douglas Hogg
Conservative MP for Sleaford & North Hykeham
Standing down at next election
2007-08
Total expenses £127,902
of which second
home allowance £23,083
Claim: The Telegraph says former cabinet minister Douglas Hogg submitted claims for more than £2,000 to clear a moat around his Lincolnshire estate and £14,500 for a housekeeper.

Response: Mr Hogg said it was wrong to say he had claimed for the moat. In a statement, he said the costs were included on paperwork submitted to the fees office but were not claimed. But he told the BBC he had claimed for the housekeeper.
