Ashton rules himself out of Brighton

Norwich City Striker Dean Ashton has ruled himself out of Saturday's trip to Brighton after suffering a recurrence of his head injury which forced him into an early departure from last night's morale boosting win over Hull city.

The £3million striker admitted he had defied advice from club physio Neal Reynolds and started last night's match without wearing a special mask to protect a small fracture of his sinus.

Ashton worse a bandage around his head instead but with just seconds remaining of the first half he signalled to the bench that he was unable to continue. However the was later at pains to stress that it was his decision to start the game - and added that he had also made the decision to carry on after picking up the injury during last Saturday's home defeat by Reading.

Ashton's decision has come at some cost, with Saturday's trip to the South coast a definite non-starter and he will also pull out if selected of the England U21 Squad for their matches against Austria and Poland.

Ashton had tried out a mask before the game, but struggled with it.

“If the mask isn't comfortable you don't wear the mask, as simple as that,” he said. “It was down to me that I played. I tried the mask on and did some heading and it felt fine. But it was pressing quite hard on my face and I was struggling vision wise, therefore I decided I couldn't wear it and went with the bandage instead.”

Ashton's initial injury came during the first half against reading and held up play for around five minutes. However the player was able to carry on - a decision he said he was comfortable with.

“On Saturday I was not concussed, I know people thought I was concussed but I played on, I was fine. I just felt a little dizzy when I stood up. The rest of the game was down to me not my head.

“Tonight I went to see the specialist who told me I could play with the mask fine, but I could play without it at my own risk. There were risks I was told of and Neal Reynolds advised me personally not to play without the mask, but it was my decision to play.

“I was fully aware of the risks but felt well enough to play but then came off because it started to hurt.

“I felt I couldn't concentrate fully on the game and therefore it wasn't fair on my team mates to carry on. But it was all my decision.”

Ashton said that the pain had begun to build up about 10 minutes before he left the field.

“It was just a gradual thing but I was concentrating more on my head than on the game, which isn't fair on the team.”
