[Albion] Should we have had a penalty?

Yes. The whole thing was bizarre though.

Because Montoya and no other players appealed I just assumed he must have fallen and it wasn’t a foul but then I saw the replay.

I honestly think if Montoya and the other players had appealed, the ref would have given it, it would have then gone to VAR who would then have confirmed it was a penalty.

Yep.

Play like Zaha* i.e. 'cheating' = success

Play like Montoya i.e. 'honest' = failure

* other 'cheats' are available

Was classic VAR.

Took too long to sort.

Numerous lines and angles trying to prove a fingernail was offside

Then cuts to the foul which is a clearly a stonewall pen to everyone watching . Replays it numerous times which futher concludes this.

Decides - No pen , play on

F k VAR

Took 1 look slow mo to see he clipped his left foot and was a pen. No idea what discussion they had about that one

Montoya didn't seem to think so.No from me.Their keeper would probably have saved it on last night's performance.

VAR, friend only to the broadcaster, VAR
VAR, what is it good for?
Absolutely nothing
Say it, VAR, good god now, what is it good for?
Absolutely nothing, say it, (VAR)
Oh no, there's got to be a better way
Say it again, there's got to be a better way

Is there any reason why it wouldn’t be a penalty? It just shows how ridiculous VAR is. The ref would have given it if he’d seen a replay.

If he stayed on the floor clutching his leg instead of attempting a shot, I think it would have been given.

A point made also by Jamie Carragher. Who can blame a player throwing himself to the floor under such a regime?

Gutless VAR team, basically. Institutionally gutless, too.

I think Montoya dragging his left foot on the ground, before the foul, confused the issue for the VAR ref.

Apparently the MLS doesn't have the offside lines and angles, it has very much an 'umpires call' approach.

In America they would have looked at the offside part of the decision once and said 'he onside enough, right let's look at the foul'.

That seems a far more sensible approach.

<sigh>

VAR is like sex. It can be amazing, but it can also be shit. It all depends who's doing it. :shrug:

Last night it was Swiss Tony.

This was dumb though, the offside was only relevant if they were going to give the pen, work out if it is a penalty first, if so then check for the offside. If they had decided no penalty then it would have been over much quicker.

You're right in all your criticisms. But how does the ref not give it. His view is near enough the camera angle which shows that it's a nailed on pen.

Appalling officiating from all concerned.

I think that the VAR decision was based on the fact that Montoya even though fouled got his shot away and could have scored. It should have been pen in my opinion because there was no advantage gained ie goal.
