Albion are trying to make four permanent signings to bolster their inexperienced and injury-hit squad before the transfer window shuts at midnight on Wednesday.

Assistant manager Dean White is hoping for a hectic finale to January after the Seagulls completed the capture yesterday of 20-year-old French utility player Zoumana Bakayogo on loan from Millwall for the rest of the season.

Albion, at home to Port Vale today, are still too close to the League One relegation zone for comfort and the pressure is mounting on chairman Dick Knight to close deals with the transfer clock ticking.

White said: "There are several targets we have gone for and we are still waiting. We have gone for some experienced players, we are just waiting to find out if they are going to come.

"We have got a list of permanent signings, not loan players, that we have been pursuing for the past month.

"The list has changed a little bit but we've still got back-up players we are going for. We did a lot of homework before the window opened.

"If we get what we want there will be four. Things get in the way and other clubs get in the way but these players haven't gone anywhere else.

"We've got a very young squad, a lot of them in their first season, and they have done exceptionally well but we need to help them through this next period."

The plan is to strengthen in all areas of the pitch, particularly the strike force.

White said: "No disrespect to the players up front but they are young lads learning their trade.

"They are not coming on for 20 minutes here and there, or playing a couple of games and then being taken out, which is what normally happens at pro clubs.

"They need nurturing and we are not able to do that at the moment, because we are not able to replace them.

"We need strengthening, players to help the lads that are here now. We know that, everyone is aware of that and we are doing everything in our power to bring players in, but there is only so much you can do. Somewhere along the line it has to happen."

Looks like the pressure is on Dick Knight to approve and buy all of these players... will be interesting to see how many we get if any, or all.

Dick, Dick, Dick, Dick, Dick why oh why even bother to say this stuff my man. Best to say 'we are brassic, no two ways about it but we are trying to get people in. However its is very difficult to do that on our budget so people will have to be patient and realistic.' Hope is the killer.

Getting four players in means that at least four players wont get a renewal on their contract at the end of this season. Experienced players that are playing reserve league football at present will only come here if they can get a deal. In the good old days an experienced player would have been 35 or 36 which no doubt today means 27 or 28.

The window of opportunity is still open for those who want to jump through it.

Players used to move from what was the old 1st division to the 2nd as they got older that left some to move from the 2nd to 3rd etc. With the wages they earn in the premiership you do not get that very often now as they earn their money at the top to keep them going players like Darren Anderton going to Bournmeouth do not happen very often.

in 1965 we bought Bobby Smith from Spurs for a reputed £5,000 fee plus paying his bookies bills, 6 months after he played for England, could you see that happening now anybody buying Paul Scholes in 6 months time for a nominal fee.

Why is it all doom and gloom? No comparissons can be drawn between this and when McGhee was incharge. At least the club actually have a list of players they want which was drawn up before the transfer window. I believe the better planning will pay off and if i had to trust anyone to sell the club to a potential signing, it would be Wikins - he clerly has a love for the club. Also the chairman seems more willing to back Wilkins with money that he would with McGhee. KEEP THE FAITH! We'll sign at least two players before the window closes and possibly another one on loan.

On NSC for over two decades...
Well there was that chap on the phone in talking about Darren Currie and Nicky Forster.

I could certainly see Currie having affection enough for the club to want to come back.
