Whether true or not I do not know but I was told, by a postman that irrespective of the time of day that the mail is collected from the boxes around Burgess Hill Haywards Heath area the pot sit ibn BH Main post depot until 2.00pm and is then taken via HH to Redhill to be sorted. So if you posta letter at 4.30 or 9.00am it will still go at 2.00pm from the depot.
I now only buy 2nd class stamps and answer letters the day they arrive and send everything via 2nd class or by recorded if really important.
