I'm never playing those 'crack' machines again as long as I set foot in a betting shop. Been about six or seven years now and it's impossible to beat them long term. Last night I was in Betfred and there was an Asian bloke who covered every number apart from 11. Well you can guess what happened. Bank notes were being stuffed in thereafter! He'd been in there sometime according to Maria.

They can f*** up lives big time.

I developed a bit of an addiction today, in the absence of having ANYTHING else to do. I ended up putting about £200 I think, something like that. In 3 different bookies (2 Corals and a Choice) and although I did make a profit in the end, I don't know exactly how much because I lost track of what I was pumping in, I know I have a problem. Working in Ladbrokes, I play on the training card in the shop and I've literally lost a virtual £2,000 in the space of about 10 minutes! So I know better, but I don't know better. I deffinitely came out ahead, it's not possible that I didn't. But even so.

I've told a close friend though, so I have support! Admitting it is hard, but stopping is worse. I'm not that bad, I've not lost all my wages for the month or anything. But I'd be so much better off if I didn't lose so much in the machines every month. I'm a weak person.

At least you admit you have a bit of a problem,that is an important step.You are lucky you have some support,it will take loads of willpower to keep away from gambling all your money away because that is what you will do eventually.
The trouble with a gambling addiction is that it only stops when the well has run dry,by this time you will probably have lost support of your close friend.
I am not an expert but I do have experience of this,when you are bored try anything,crosswords,read a book,sudoku,or if possible go for a walk anything but gambling.
I hope this is a little bit helpful but if you are not careful the only way you will stop is when you hit rock bottom,and nobody wants that to happen.

2/ you looked at the previous numbers and none of yours are up there and your in both cases fooled into thinking its my lucky day.

Sometimes your right its bordem, find something else that will take you away from the real world for a while, something like football manager or something.

But if your like me, and kinda liked the drama and self inflicted pain this can cause. You gotta sort out what you are pissed off with in your personal life first.

I never let myself lose more than £25, but since turning 18 I am 100% up (will end up down eventually, of course)..but I don't always play to win, I actually enjoy it. Sitting round a roulette table, with an ice cold beer, having a laugh with the 'Spinner' with a bit of music in the backround, to me, is a laugh. (espically when you're winning)....

Sitting infront of a machine in a bookies, with the commentrary from a random horse race in one ear, and some bloke cheering on a horse in the other, is NOT fun.

If you're going to gamble on roulette - get yourself down the casino.

Talking of the Mong who watches you lose and comments on it, there was of course one watching me this evening. And after I had spun a £20 spin, which would have left me with £0 credit if all failed, he told me he would have done 5. Which I hadn't covered. Luckily, happily, and mercifully, it landed on 29 which I did have covered, so I gave him a "glad I didn't have anything on the 5!", and he went off to find someone else to talk to.

It's possible that you made a profit - the margins on these machines are very tight, so if you put £200 in, you might well have got £220 back.
But you admit yourself that you lost track, and the basic fact is that you can't beat the margins. As with casino roulette, the more you bet, the more certain you are to lose in the end. And these are not just souped-up versions of the pub fruities. They are designed with the help of psychologists and behaviourologists to maximise turnover.

They are truly lethal, and should never have been allowed into high street shops in the first place. You seem to have escaped this time, but many others will not be as fortunate. And if you have the slightest tendency towards addictive behaviour, the danger will always be there.

I completely agree, Mtoto. They shouldn't have been allowed into high street shops. The money I've seen people lose on them is incredible, I'm not going to become one of those stories. I got lucky yesterday, I made a decent profit. But there have been many days when it hasn't ended up so well. The only way to give up is to not start. Unfortunately, I've always had addictive tendencies, from the Powerpodz to the Merlin Footie Stickers.

You're not a weak person for having an addiction. Don't feel guilty and it sounds like you've got a really good mate there that will support you through it. You do find out a lot about people when you need help desperately. While I've always felt my gambling has been under control but my alcohol, cocaine, ecstasy and tranquilliser use in the last few years has made me feel helpless and pushed me to the edge. Any addiction can make a person very ill and it's about not realising the impact it can have on people close to you with the mood swings.

I know how awful those machines are. The bookies are just greedy bastards that don't care at all about their vulnerable punters. I'd love to see those machines banned but know that they won't be. It's almost seven years since I played on one and have never been tempted again.
