R.I.P. Fred.

He was just retiring as I was getting into tennis, but I still remember him playing in the Wimbledon Men's Senior Doubles in the 70s and 80s. He is one of those names that won't mean much to many but this guy was some player.

Two interesting facts about Stolle:

1. He reached the final of all 4 tennis major Grand Slam tournaments in the singles, doubles and mixed.
2. In 1964 he reached the final of the Wimbledon singles, doubles and mixed, playing a total of 19 matches, 61 sets, 631 games of tennis over 13 days with one day's rest in the middle, this at a time when there were no tie-breakers.

So that's more than the equivalent of playing a 5 set match every single day of the 12 playing days.

Will there be a minute's silence before the game tomorrow?
