You had to be there to believe it! I wasn't trying to be funny when I said "we're eating boeuf bourgignon, and that's why we chose a burgundian wine, you've offered me a bordeaux and a rhone, can I just see your list to see if you have any other burgundian wines, or perhaps any similar character new world pinot noirs. he refused, and just said "it's one of these or nothing"!! I said "OK, if that's what it has to be, but I'm sure I saw on your list a CDR 2006 from Cairanne, can I have a look at that because 2006 was a cracking vintage in southern rhone"

This is such a "Hove" rant. I love it. It's like listening to Cameron and Osborne on a night out :)

My nephew raves about Days, has anybody any views on their self service buffet.

I find it mostly awful but with a few gems. The standard fare is mostly rubbish and the chicken tastes so little like chicken it's amazing. Sadly most of the dishes are chicken based.
Chef serves up some fresh stuff though and specials up at the back. They also make their sushi on site which can all be good.
It's tremendous value, no doubt, but don't expect much quality.
One thing that mystifies me (with my business head on) is why they only charge £3 for a pint. Surely with margins so tight, the one place they could make a decent profit is beer sales. No idea at all why they'd want to keep it so cheap.

I see the guys from Meatliquor are trying to open their first place outside London - in Brighton.
I'm simply amazed they want to open it right where the smack heads and street drinkers hang out though. Right opposite the taxi rank known as 'The Smelly' by cabbies.
Clearly no local insight and the lure of a cheap rent dragged them in.
I may sound bitter but I have a lot of previous with the owner so I won't be sorry if its a disaster !

Just been to Pollen Street Social. Started off the night with a vodka martini (olive) then got stuck into Atherton's tasting menu and some crisp German white...before moving onto the redder stuff. From the Ramsey school, as The Merry Prankster has mentioned, but I think he's a little more adventurous. A great evening and the oyster ice cream was my favourite. Highly recommended.

Days (again) to celebrate Mini coming of age (well 15).

To be honest pretty good value for money and the kids like it a lot.

I see Harry's is opening again as a restaurant. It'll be called 'Number 43' or something similar so it'll either be another English restaurant based at number 43 Church Road, or a Chinese that specialises in one dish only. Number 43. If this is the case I just hope number 43 on the menu is Kung Po Chicken as its my favourite.

No doubt somebody will give us an insight nto the place when it opens. When is it due to open, before Christmas I would guess?

Anybody able to comment on The Cuthbert please? I've been recommended this place but have no knowledge of it.

Thanks.

Yup, love it. Salad starter is actually amazing and the steak frites is perfect - and then they rock up and give you a whopping great second portion. Go and report back.

Just been looking for somewhere to eat at the weekend and looked up the website of this place. I love their description of the food on offer, especially their concession for vegetarians:

Menu and prices
Start with a green salad with mustard vinaigrette topped with walnuts, followed by steak frites, £21

Vegetarian option
We welcome vegetarians.
Start with a green salad with mustard vinaigrette topped with walnuts, followed by a selection of cheeses and accompanied by frites plus a dessert of your choice

So, had a lovely weekend in London with the good lady wife (didn't go to the Palace match!) and took her to visit Pitt Cue Co. Apologies for the second review but it is such a great little place to visit. My wife had the pulled pork sandwich which was as good as ever. I had one of the specials which was a hot chopped rib bun - this is the meat from the ribs stripped off and served in a brioche bun with their home made chipotle sauce, pickles and onion. We also had rib tips, rib cap beans (their own style of baked beans mixed with bits of meat and bone marrow) and the braised sprout tops with bacon.

Everything was very good - great simple food done very well. It's not a place for vegetarians but carnivores will be in their element with very slow cooked prime meat.

Whilst on this unhealthy eating weekend, I also paid a visit to Borough market and had the Brindisa chorizo roll. For those of you who walk past this place on your way into the Market Porter this is a great pre-match snack (probably best to have after your beer).

In Freshfield Road, Kemp Town(ish). Used to be a so-so pub, now more of a restaurant. Good food apparently, according to the very few people I know who've actually tried it.

After reports that they had got their act together I tried 'Bankers' again today. Haddock and chips, mushy peas, cod roe and a pot of tea. >£15.

Not totally crap. The tea, mushy peas and roe were fine but it's a f***ing fish and chip restaurant for f***'s sake. The fish was tired and chewy, the chips were pale, room temperature and cloying. I guess they just plated up stuff from the take away counter (4pm Sunday). Won't be going there again. £15.10 ..... not good enough, not good enough at all.

RIP 'The Chip Basket'

I'm thinking of going to this place before the Charlton game. A tea-time trip to The Meantime brewery will bookend the game rather well.

The only Bankers I know is in Western Road [Hove End],and we have used it for some years as it absoulutely tops.Last week we made another visit and both agreed it was better than ever. It is well used and it is obvious that many customers are regular,we visited the Eastbourne branch of Harry Ramsden in the Autumn and it was nowhere as good as Bankers,we intend to find out if Bankers have any branches in other towns in Sussex.

Assuming you are talking about Pitt Cue, it opens at 12pm and we joined the queue at 11:50. All of the tables were just after opening so don't leave it too late - especially with all those xmas shoppers around.

Somebody mentioned this on a thread earlier in the year but if it is fish and chips that you want and you happen to be in Littlehampton try Freds near The Nelson pub by the road up to Billy Smarts as was, and you will find it is excellent value for money very well freshly cooked while you wait.

I did The Cuthbert with the family a coule of weeks ago, and it was superb. Including booze we did about 200 notes between the 5 of us, but the choice of dishes was good, and the quality of food first class. Good wine list, really excellent service from young people who really did care about the business. I hope it succeeds - as you say it is well off the beaten track, but for an £8 cab ride each way from The Metropole we got a truly excellent evening for a price that I just don't think you could get in the centre of town.

For as long as it is there, it will be my first choice whenever I'm in town with a reason to fine dine.....
