Cheltenham's 100% record in the Football Combination Southern Division was brought to an end this afternoon with Brighton winning 3-0.

Two goals in the first half from George Barker and Torbjorn Agdestein placed the game firmly in Brighton's favour and it never looked as though Cheltenham would get anything from the game from that point on.

A second half strike from Agdestein confirmed the three points but it was Brighton's possession play that was the biggest talking point in this game. The Robins struggled to cope with the opposition's patient style of play and slipped to their first defeat of the reserve season.

Brighton & Hove Albion Reserves (4-4-2): Poke (GK); Strong, Cook, Hall, Sampayo; Rodgers, Forster-Caskey, Kasim (Sherriff 80), Simmonds (Smith 69); Agdestein, Barker (Woodley 76)

Our reserve league is a right noddy affair - Cheltenham, Torquay and Crawley to name three. Where are the Pompeys, Southamptons, Milwalls and Charltons, or are our reserves excluded from playing with the 'bigger' boys because we've languished in the lower leagues for so long?

Back after a one month loan, according to the official site.

I look forward to the arguments when he does get in the first team and you lot are trying to sort out a song for him. And no cheating using his first name.

Agd-Stein a go go, do do do do, do do do do....

From the Cheltenham Town site:

Cheltenham's 100% record in the Football Combination Southern Division was brought to an end this afternoon with Brighton winning 3-0.

Two goals in the first half from George Barker and Torbjorn Agdestein placed the game firmly in Brighton's favour and it never looked as though Cheltenham would get anything from the game from that point on.

A second half strike from Agdestein confirmed the three points but it was Brighton's possession play that was the biggest talking point in this game. The Robins struggled to cope with the opposition's patient style of play and slipped to their first defeat of the reserve season.

Both sides started on an even footing in the early stages of the game but Brighton's play effectively cancelled out any attacking flow Cheltenham may have had. The first chance of the game did fall to the Robins though with Darryl Duffy's 45 yard speculative strike flying just over the bar. That was followed up by a 40 yard freekick by Danny Andrew which never looked like troubling Michael Poke in the Brighton goal.

The Cheltenham left back almost grabbed the opener when he accelerated down the left wing before driving in a cross which was blow towards goal by high winds. Poke was quick to react and tipped it over the bar and the goalkeeper was called into action again soon after when he tipped Matt William's header over the bar following the corner.

Brighton took the lead in the 25th minute when George Barker pounced upon some sloppy defending before netting a low shot past Poole to make it 1-0. That scoreline was then doubled three minutes later when Torbjorn Agdestein picked up on a through ball and drilled the ball past Poole. Patience and possession was paying off for Brighton as they took the lead in at half time.

Half Time: Robins 0-2 Brighton

Trialist Luke Benbow was brought on at half time to help rejuvenate Cheltenham's attacking presence but it was Brighton that started the better of both sides. George Barker came close with a half volley from a Rogers' cross but Poole was able to pull off a superb save to turn the effort round the post.

It wasn't long before Brighton had pretty much confirmed their win and the third goal came courtesy of the very useful Agdestein. The lanky striker cut in from the right and struck a low drive past Poole to make it 3-0 and virtually condemn the Robins to their first defeat of the reserve season.

Chances were few and far between after the third goal with Brighton seemingly happy to hold onto the ball and Cheltenham struggling to make anything happen in the final third. Anton Rodgers, son of Swansea manager Brendan, wasted a good chance to make it 4-0 with a chipped effort that went wide of goal.

There were late chances for Darryl Duffy and substitute Joe Hanks but it was always Brighton's three points and the Robins slumped to their first defeat of the Football Combination season.

Full Time: Robins 0-3 Brighton

John Brough speaking after the 3-0 reserve defeat to Brighton this afternoon:

"I think we were taught a bit of a lesson in keeping the ball today. They passed the ball very well and the rotation of their frontmen and midfielders was excellent. We struggled to get close to them in order to stop them keeping that possession.

"It was a lesson and that is what reserve team football is all about. It's about developing and experiences but that was certainly one today. When we play teams who play that style of football then, as a staff, we'll be expecting the players to have learnt from today.

"Reserve football is all about the performances but if we manage to win the league then that is just the icing on the cake. Initially it's all about giving players games and introducing young players into adult football. The return of reserve football has been good for us apart from the blip today. It's not going to be 9-1 every week and it was a learning curve this afternoon. Hopefully we'll see a big improvement next time around.

"I thought Darryl (Duffy) and Jeff (Goulding) did well today despite not getting much service. Their attitudes were very good and they worked hard without seeing too much of the ball. The 90 minutes will be very important for them and they will be ready if called upon on at Accrington on Friday."
