Reserves Lose At Wycombe

Albion's reserves lost 3-0 this afternoon after a second-half hat-trick from Jonny Dixon gave Wycombe victory.

Jonny Dixon netted a hat trick as Wanderers beat Brighton & Hove Albion in today's Pontin's Holday Combination Reserve fixture.

The Blues fielded a different side to the one that narrowly lost to QPR last week with Matt Bloomfield stepping into the eleven as captain and triallist Danny Brown replacing Tom Cadmore at centre back.

A quiet first period created few opportunities for both sides but Wycombe saw plenty of the ball, with full backs Danny Woodards and Nathan Simpson, drafted in from Chelsea and Crystal Palace respectively, both looking comfortable when called upon.

Steven Gregory also put in an assured display in the middle of the park and it was a credit to the youngster's performance that he held his own when up against the likes of experienced campaigners such as Charlie Oatway.

The only major incident in the half saw Frederico Turnienzo head wide for the visitors from close range after Dean Cox had swng in a pinpoint cross.

It was a clear cut opportunity for the Argentinian who provided the competition for his fellow countrymen Sergio Torres to step up his claim for a call up to John Gorman's side.

Shortly after the interval, Ian Stonebridge had a chance to open the scoring but could only direct his shot at keeper Florent Chaigneau following a swift counter attack started by Bloomfield and helped on by Ikechi Anya.

Two minutes later however, Dixon snatched at his first of the afternoon in similar circumstances from the goal he scored at Swindon earlier in the season.

After Bloomfield delivered a corner, it looked as though Stonebridge was second best to win the ball in the area but the 24 year old rose well to brilliantly nod it downwards.

Frenchman Chaigneau went to gather but as Dixon challenged, the ball found it's way into the back of the net and Wanderers were one up.

The lead was nearly short lived when Oatway found himself in yards of space following another Cox cross but the impudent midfielder, who joined the Seagulls in 1999, headed straight at Williams.

As a result, Wycombe paced into the Brighton half, as the first team had done with such effect on Saturday, and only the woodwork could deny Stonebridge from getting his name on the scoresheet.

Torres and Bloomfield both played a part in the move that ended with the former Plymouth striker rattling a left foot drive onto the crossbar. Dixon was the quickest to react but his cut back was just a tad too far for his captain who's shot was blocked by Gary Elphick.

The Brighton defender was at fault two minutes later though as Dixon stole in for his brace. Another nice move culminated in Bloomfield stabbing the ball into the area and as Chaigneau and Elphick both went for the cross, Stonebridge got their first to present Dixon with an open goal, which he duly converted.

Adam El-Abd then came close for the visitors with a speculative shot from outside the area but it was no match for Anya's superb volley that forced a good save from Chaigneau.

Fifteen minutes before the end Dixon completed his hat trick, thanks to a deflection off the unfortunate Elphick. Some neat trickery from Torres saw the ball reach the 21 year old 18 yards out and after thrashing at the ball, the Seagulls centre half helped it over his keeper's head to put the game to bed.

Reserves Lose At Wycombe

Albion reserve team boss Dean White was fuming this afternoon after watching his side lose 3-0 at Wycombe in the Pontins Holiday Combination.

A second-half hat-trick from 21-year-old striker Jonny Dixon did the damage for the home side, leaving White utterly disappointed with his team's performance.

"It simply wasn't good enough," he told seagulls.co.uk. "In the first half we did ok, and created a few chances. But in the second half too many of our players just didn't put the work in.

"I'm disappointed in them. I think they're disappointed in themselves, or at least I hope they are.

"In the five years that I've been here it is rare for me to be this disappointed. But I've spoken to each player individually, and we'll go on from here."

Federico Turienzo had Albion's best chance in the first period, but headed Dean Cox's centre wide of the mark.

The Chairboys took the lead shortly after the interval, when Dixon beat Florent Chaigneau to an Ian Stonebridge knock-down to toe the ball into the net.

Stonebridge then hit the post before Dixon grabbed his second of the afternoon, capitalising from a defensive mix-up between Chaigneau and Gary Elphick.

With quarter-of-an-hour to go Dixon rounded off his hat-trick, the striker's shot deflecting off the unfortunate Elphick and over Chaigneau into the back of the net.

Albion's afternoon had got off to a bad start, when youth team scholar Wes Fogden limped out after only five minutes with an ankle injury.
