to save cluttering up the results thread, here a few facts about this match.
The first Clymping player was sent off for foul and abusive language directed at the referee.
Southwick were winning the game 5-0, goals from Blundell 4 and Logan 1
Following a tackle on him the Clymping number 9 punched a Southwick player in the face several times. In the melee that followed the Clymping number 5 who had already been booked punched another Southwick player in the back of the head.
The referee sent both players off but the 9 did not want to go and butted the referee with enough force to send the referee through the wooden railings. The referee was concussed and suffered a cut eye and bruising to his face and the game was immediately abandoned. He was treated at pitchside by the Southwick physio for about 10 minutes.
The police were called but the players involved had already left the ground.
The referee was taken to hospital and has subsequently been discharged, thankfully with no broken bones.
Stringz is correct that there should be no speculation about what should happen now. The relevant authorities will deal with the situation in the proper manner.
The result pales into insignificance. As football people we should be more concerned about the well being of the referee. He did not deserve any of that treatment and i hope that it will not discourage him from officiating in the future.
The Clymping representatives were very apologetic about the behaviour of the players involved in the incident and made us feel welcome after the dust had settled.
These are the facts. No more speculation needed

Hmmm. One lifetime ban from football coming up, and a potential assault charge, depending on the referee's view?

potential? Eye-witnesses a plenty, nutted hard enough to fall through railings, be concussed, need treatment and a game to be abandoned.I'd say the no 5 has to be looking at a visit to a magistrate's court soon.

It should one on Juniors team was banned for life at 18 but it was outrageous as he head butted the referee

Also it seems this team had more than one thug - punching opposition players is just as bad in my eyes.

Would depend on whether anyone reports it to the police.

Really? I'll cede to you on this but it looks like someone did report it to the police for them to be present (albeit late) and if the police have enough of a reasonable case to proceed they don't specifically need the victim to co-operate do they? Domestic abuse cases are sometimes brought even when the victim refuses to co-operate if there is enough evidence,

Think you'll find the aggrieved has to sign a statement .

Yes, but domestic abuse is a rather different situation in that the victim is significantly more likely to be attacked again by the same person, and is also much more likely to be pressured by the offender into not taking action, therefore the police and the CPS have been known to take the decision out of the victim's hands to protect them and to ensure the offender doesn't escape justice because he's very persuasive.

With a referee, it's only going to end up being investigated if either the official or someone else reports it: there is no realistic prospect of a prosecution otherwise, therefore it's not in the public interest to take it further. The fact that the police attended suggests someone reported it, therefore it's a possibility the official does want something done about it.

Totally deserves a ban for life from football. Let that be a lesson to anyone else who thinks they can take the law into their own hands and be violent to a referee. Even eejets like Terry/Rooney draw the line with a lot of effing & jeffing.

I seem to remember a similar news story, not so long ago, in the midlands.

The assailant had the book thrown at him, not only by the local FA but by the courts too.
No mitigation 'cos it's football innit gov', the player did some serious prison time.
