TD - sorry you've joined the ranks of unemployed people. I've been out of work now for 2 months, and I can honestly say I'm not feeling negative about it, in fact I'm using the time positvely and enjoying life right now
Firstly, if you haven't got a good payoff and need to claim benefits, do that now. They are taking an age to process payments at the moment, and you should expect a wait of at least 2 months before you receive a penny!
I have decided to use this time to retrain. I already have financial qualifications, but I have just signed up to do 2 OU courses. I know of at least 2 other OU studiers on this board, and there may be more. But there are lots of courses available, you don't need to do a full degree if you don't want to, just pick and choose the courses you'd enjoy. Most courses have tutorials, so you will get the chance to meet and socialise with other students
Because I am now living on JSA, I've had to look at what I spend each week. One of the major things I've changed is to cook everything from scratch now. If you can already cook, just start experimenting with recipes. If you haven't cooked before, perhaps buy Jamie O's DVD and book, and start teaching yourself with something simple. It's very rewarding and far cheaper than buying ready prepared stuff
I've also got a breadmaker and slow cooker, both of these allow me to feed myself v v cheaply.
It will take a while to adjust to not having to go to work every day, but try and focus on the positive side. You've got time now to do what YOU want. Instead of giving all your waking hours to travelling and your employer, use them for you, improving your skills, catching up with mates etc etc

Sorry to hear of your demise.... Its a chance to reflect what YOU want to do for a change. If you had not been made redundanant you might well have spent a lot more of your working life there and, would you have really enjoyed that ?
It's been forced on you and so its a good idea to look for something that really inspires you or interests you.
As above, make the most of your cash by cooking from scratch and baking your own bread plus you could turn some of your garden over to growing some veg to keep you busy and fit and for the mental benefits.

Everyone who is being put out of work because of these difficult times have my whole hearted sympathy, and I honestly do wish all of you all the best of luck for the future.
As many will recall, I got made redundant last September, from a job I had been in for many years, as i was in management in the housing development world and I am close on 54 the chances of me working in that industry again are nothing but remote, in fact i think Brighton have better promotion chances this season than that happening
I was on all the perks a good job brings, company car etc etc, but today i have just finished training in the security industry, admittadly my wages are less than half than what i was on, but like someone else said above, I honestly do feel lucky that I have been re-employed, at least I am still going to be able to pay the mortgage and other household bills, so compared to many others I am very lucky.
As i said before, i do honestly wish you all the best of luck, all i will say is dont give up hope, and if your industry is like my old one and has had it for the next couple of years, really do try for something else, something will come along in the end.

I was made redundant four years ago so you have my sympathy. The not getting up for work thing is strange and it is important to set yourself a routine.
First thing to do is to brush up the CV. I had different versions which I would use depending on the job I was going for- one highlighted my technical skills, one my management experience, one a mix of the two. In these days of online job applications many firms no longer accept CVs but you can at least cut and paste the stuff you have prepared. Get yourself on the various jobsites - especially those related to any area of specialism you may have.
My routine was to get up at a reasonable time and spend the morning 'working' - trawling the job sites, papers, etc. In the afternoons I tried to find cheap things to do to keep me occupied. As an STH I used the free entry to afternoon reserve games to kill time. I also went horse racing (my vice) but being sensible about betting. Once a week I would catch up with friends or former colleagues over lunch to keep tabs on what is going on in the business world and also to keep up with both banter and get some decent conversation.
If it gives you some hope, I took a significant drop in pay compared to what I had been on to take a job in local government - a different field to that which I had previously been employed in. It has worked out really well for me and I am probably better off now than I would have been if I hadn't been made redundant.
The climate is tough but there are still opportunities out there. The teams I now manage have several positions that are being advertised so I would suggest looking at sites like jobsgopublic where local authorities advertise positions.
