Reality check! How much does it cost to get out of league 1?

This drubbing has really made me think that we need serious investment. I'm talking about £2m spread over about 4 quality players if we are to be serious about promotion.

Things are changing, we have Southampton/Huddersfield and even Notts County in league 2 spending big on transfer fees/wages. Is it realistic to think that by us bringing in majority free transfers and a few 100k players we should be promotion candidates?

I'm playing devils advocate here, thoughts?

Totally agree! Bloom/the Board need to weigh up the situation and decide whether they want to run a club thats permantly punching above it's weight playing mid-table, league 1 football every season or to put a decent investment into 4-5 players and steer the club into a serious promotion contending side.

It seems madness to put all that cash into Falmer to play Leauge 1 football with a below par team, simply dodging relegation every season....

Before the season started Bloom clearly said he wanted a top 2 finish. That means buying far better quality players than we already have...

Bloody hell, 2 million for 4 players? o_O We brought in a right back, centre back central mid and 4 strikers this year. Rhodes cost 150k, simpson about 300, Novak about 50, not sure on robinson or peltier but wont be too much. Kay was free, clarke was free.

Lets call it 1.2 million (very tops) for 7 players. 4 of them strikers who look very good. You dont need loads of cash. centre back, centre mid, 2 strikers cost you 200k if you go by what we did. Thats a good start.

But you already had Gary Roberts who is, let's face it, bloody good. Not to mention Michael Collins who is simply magnificent aswell. And obviously you've got a decent spine anyway, having finished 9th(?) last season, you've just added the additional quality you need after getting the nucleus right last season. Which is why Brighton did for the first of the two back to back Championships, we got a squad together and then added a couple of additional players to make us championship winners. You're a year ahead in your development, that's all. The thing is we want the top 2 this season, so we have to follow a different model to you who have put a squad together over the last year or so, and then added the neccessary quality this summer in order to push on that extra step.

i agree entirely, if bloom really is serious about promotion he needs to get out the cheque book big time, he says players are above us commanding a 1million pound transfer fee but that is the sort of money its going to take to get us out of this league, and it'll take more than one of them to make us serious contenders

Ask Scunthorpe last season... They obviously spent MILLIONS.

Scunny spent nearly £2M gambling on getting into the Championship which is worth at least £5M more in revenue , etc.

Some of that is true, yes. Roberts is a good player as brought in by ternant (turnip). Cant agree with collins though. He may get the goals, but he spends most of the game running around in circles doing nothing. He put too much pressure on jim Goodwin, his centre mid partner from last year, who got 15 yellow cards, about half due to collins not getting stuck in meaning Goodwin has to take the foul out of position.

Too many changes too quickly upset the team and players cant gel. That was why turnip got sacked early last year (and also because he bought 4 centre mids to go with the 4 we already had and bought too many other players we didnt need)

We don't need to spend a penny. A fine job of getting out of League 1 is being done right now.

Oh, did you mean promotion?

We could have got the attacking midfielder for free in fact not sure if he was offered a deal by Pompey or not if not he is probably still available Eugene Bopp. So the answer to the question is very little.
