personal favourite is

'King Alfred is dead'

edit just seen above!!

Not a billboard, but an opening sentence from a major international story that shows just how parochial a local newspaper can be:-

Former Sussex agricultural labourer, Jomo Kenyatta, died today.

This goes back to the sixties when Harold Wilson was PM and a cabinet reshuffle was announced. It was in fact the front page headline...

WILSON GETS HIS CHOPPER OUT

I can't recall any local billboard headlines that made me chortle, so forgive me for mentioning a couple of newspaper headlines that stick in my mind.

One comes from them cheeky funsters at the ol' Current Bun:-

Slim-Fad Girl, 17, Vanishes

The second came from some State-side rag & went..

..Man Struck By LIghtening Faces Battery Charge

You couldn't make it up! Oh, hang on a mo'... :dunce:

The King Alfred one for me.

Much as I get bored of the Argus's petty parochialism and stirring up of total non-issues, that was a good 'un.
