the worst thing about Radio 1 is not the playlist but some of the shocking DJs like bloody Edith Bowman, Dick & Dom (yes those two muppets off kiddie tele) and Ferne & Reggie. Its like listening to childrens tele just painful.

Have to admit the playlist is pretty crap as well but Zane Lowe and Colin Murray improve that later at night

The trouble is that throughout the day the only discernible difference between Radio 1 and any other commercial pop station (Southern, Ocean, Juice etc.) are the adverts you don't get on the BBC.

They're all playing the same limited play list of dull pop dross. On the occasion that the top 20 actually possesses a couple of decent tracks they'll either ignore them or overplay them to the point they simply blend in against the rest of the mediocre pop background smudge.

It is only in the evenings when the specialist shows appear that Radio 1 is worth listening to. I like that they champion a lot of new music with Zane Lowe and the like, and still make the effort with dance music on Friday and Saturday nights, it's just a shame NOBODY is prepared to put any attempt at diverse programming out during the day. Sure, a dedicated drum n bass show broadcast mid afternoon on a local commercial FM station wouldn't attract the same audience figures as perhaps Bob and Jenny on the hit-filled afternoon fun show (or whatever they have on Southern et al) BUT it would offer people an alternative.

I don't understand why all these stations seem determined to compete for the same audience at the same time. Why not offer something different to your competitors in order to build up your own unique loyal fan base?

The only Fm radio I can handle during the day are the local pirate stations you can often pick up on your car stereo when driving up high on hill or through the crowded streets of south London. At least it's something different.

Radio in this country really needs looking at, even in this supposed digital revolution. There simply isn't the variety or choice we deserve. No diversity means no creativity. This radio censorship is stifling our cultural output, which is partly why the internet now holds so much sway in the music industry today. As soon as people have a freedom to choose, they usually do, so why hasn't the broadcast radio situation improved as a result?

Personally I don't think we're far off being able to listen to any internet radio station you like anywhere you like, iPod's will soon offer such functionality and after that car stereos and the like will follow. At this point FM radio will simply die, and they've only got themselves to blame.

My band got played on Radio 1 on Wednesday night :clap2:

It was after midnight thought :glare:

Radio 1 in the daytime is shit though. the worst thing in a way is actually when a song you like gets on the playlist, cos you know it'll be on about 3 times an hour every hour until you hate it!

It's back to the 70s with Radio 1 playing major label stuff only - is payola back?

They should be playing The Sunshine Underground, Little Man Tate, Cold War Kids and lots of other good stuff on non-majors in the day time, but noooo it's the lowest common denominator major label safe stuff. It's depressing.

I read an interesting article on teletext the other day, drawing parallels between todays Radio 1 and the days of Bruno Brooks & DLT. It made a good point; the DJs now on prime time Radio 1 care only for their own egos and not about the songs they play.

Each show is more about the presenter than the music and that surely is not a good thing!
