At a Cambridge away match a few years ago there was a bloke next to me being really vicious to a linesman who only had part of an arm (possibly Thalidomide). I was getting angrier and angrier, but only finally said something to him when a Cambridge player got injured and he started singing, 'Your wog's been taken off.'

Unfortunately, I was so incensed, I forgot nearly every word I know in the English language, and could only say, 'Do you mind?' Although I think the tone of my voice spoke volumes. He just said back to me, 'No, not really.' But he did shut up after that. The interesting thing was, he was with a gang of about four or five blokes, none of whom supported him, and they all kept fairly quiet for the rest of the match.

In fact, I'm shaking with anger again as I type this...
We had a referee last season with a deformed arm. The bloke next to me made some comment about it and got shouted down by a few people and kept quiet afterwards.

Can't say I've heard too much of it in nearly 20 years following the Albion. Some older Empire types, of whom we have a few at the Albion, seem to think that Britain should still be ruling the world and that they have a natural right to rule over "natives". The worst I have ever heard was against Millwall at the Goldstone in 1990, when Mike Small chased a ball down to the South Stand, where all the Millwall fans were, and they started giving him racist chants. He got quite upset and looked as if he would V sign them. I thought, "no, Mickey, please don't," because he would have ended up in trouble for it. I seem to remember the North Stand giving them a rather robust response.

I've only been going since about 1988 so I might have missed the worst years of racism at football (I hope so anyway) but I've only heard any racist abuse from our fans very, very rarely. I do remember one away game, can't honestly remember who against, when about half a dozen lads behind me started doing monkey noises. Thankfully they were very quickly shouted down, as other people have posted before.

Other than that, and the infamous Darren Moore bananas incident, I've never really seen or heard much at Albion games.

except for odd examples of morons we never have had a great racism problem at brighton.even at the height of n f recruitment in the 70's(they used to have a stall outside the north west corner/next to the solcialist workers oddly enough) brighton people have allways been(if even only overtly)tolerant of all races colours and sexuallities.

hmmm...not sure about that. I can remember a significant number of people in the North Stand in the late 70's making monkey noises at black players.

In more recent years I would agree it's tended to be isolated individuals or ones and twos. Ignorant twats IMO.

Racism is out of order.

But it seems to be acceptable to call people gaylords, paedophiles, rapists, wankers etc etc

The worst single incident I ever heard from Brighton fans was back around 1973/4. I think we were playing Huddersfield and they brought on a black teenager as a sub in the second half on the right wing (they were attacking the South Stand). Whenever the lad got the ball there was a chorus of monkey noises from the West Stand, very loud and sustained, not isolated. After 15 mins the lad was so upset that he was taken off. It was a really shameful episode.

I remember hearing some twat shouting
"chop the f***ing monkey down"
every time Trevor Benjamin touched the ball away at Leicester 2 years ago.
Wonder if he did the same last season when we had him...

I always told myself i would say something if i saw/heard abuse like that but when i was there i just, well didn't
