But surely Schrodinger's theory equally applies to the insides of the pie itself? Once you've opened the box you can see the pie exists but still have the unknown certainty of whether there is anything inside. It is only when you take a bite that you can truly get the answer of whether it is chicken 'state' or steak 'state'.

It depends on what you're "observing". If it's a question of pie or no pie, then you only need to open the box for the probability wave function to collapse into a certainty, but the contents are still unsure. Only when you bite into the pie does that function resolve - which begs the question, if you put a camera inside the pie all along, does it count as an observer and therefore no doubt of overall pie-ness.
