I thought that while I was watching it.... I also thought that if you make a movie costing god knows how much and the version that made it into cinemas isn't a version that Ridley Effing Scott thinks tells the story properly then there is no hope for the movie industry with such incredible stupidity.

In the US the film was given a R rating and could have had a scene removed to achieve a PG 13. Similarly in the UK it was given a 15 rating. Its all about box office revenue and the film is edited to maximise that. It will be released on DVD and Blu Ray to top up what it took at the box office. A year after that they'll release a Directors Cut version which will see it all make sense because it will have a 18 certificate.

She is in the original (swedish) TGWTDT, which is way better than the Daniel Craig version released the back end of last year.

Course she is! I'm a silly boy I was getting Rooney and Noomi mixed up. I will go and stand in the corner.
I noted on a thread at the time the American arrogance remaking a very decent and successful film. They failed. Will they try to remake the other two stories?

In an interview, Ridley suggested the reason the Engineers wanted to destroy the humans they designed was due to the fact they sent down Jesus to look after us and we crucified him. Hence the reference to the engineers dying roughly 2000 years ago. He said there is a bit in the original script that reference the Jesus stroyline but he decided not to film it.

Here y'go.

Movies.com: We had heard it was scripted that the Engineers were targeting our planet for destruction because we had crucified one of their representatives, and that Jesus Christ might have been an alien. Was that ever considered?

Ridley Scott: We definitely did, and then we thought it was a little too on the nose. But if you look at it as an “our children are misbehaving down there” scenario, there are moments where it looks like we’ve gone out of control, running around with armor and skirts, which of course would be the Roman Empire. And they were given a long run. A thousand years before their disintegration actually started to happen. And you can say, "Let's send down one more of our emissaries to see if he can stop it." Guess what? They crucified him.

Also, presumably this has been linked already, but there are more theories here:

That link is mental, I need to watch it again now :lolol:

Turns out it's a remake of a 70's Dr Who episode anyway!

Love the Alien series but had heard this was not a good film. So with that in mind as i sat down i really enjoyed it. Glad the series has moved back to it's origins. Agree with previous poster that it's better than 3 & 4. It must be seen in 3d on a big screen imo. Biggest disappointment for me is an almost complete lack of tension, which let it down badly in comparison to the first two. Also, did not like the video/cctv replay of the engineers moving around - seemed just to be there to conveniently explain the situation - very poor story telling on ridley's part. However, i still think it's a good film and must be seen. Can't wait for the next one.

Only just seen this.

It's all very well post rationalising visual allegories, but really the film itself has too many odd plot moments that you're left wondering about some fundamental decisions in the film, let alone allowing your mind to take it the greater significance of certain set pieces.

*spoiler alert*

To sum up in a single part of the plot, why the hell does the engineer go back to kill her at the end rather than just jump in the second ship? He wasn't worried about killing her or them when he took off in the first ship, why suddenly now is it necessary to kill one person when you have a whole race to destroy? It just didn't make any sense why he would then look for her in particular. When she then survives and David tells her there was another ship, it actually made me quite angry that someone was taking the piss in twisting a plot so much to make so many ideas fit together.

No wonder it needed so much editing, too much going on in the film, too many layers and it ends up being a jack of all trades, master of none.

Who was the man / creature, as start of the film?

He's an engineer, perhaps terraforming earth, or doing something to a planet to make life. The black goo is perhaps the primal soup or something, although he looks a bit shocked after he drinks it which makes you wonder if he knew it was going to destroy him or not. Maybe he knew and it's intended to spread his DNA or something, but he's perhaps not been told exactly what happens. As I said above in 2013, it is a film with so many ideas flowing through it, it never seems to manage to knit any of it together.

Watched all the Alien films although Alien and Aliens are only worth watching and even they have dated.

Question is, Is Prometheus worth bothering with, given the benefit of hindsight?

If it's on then watch it, or if you get it free through Netflix or something, then you may as well sit through it to see for yourself. However, I certainly wouldn't recommend paying for it. Even if it was a £1.99 DVD in the bargain bucket I would still think it better to save the cash toward half an Amex pie...
