The parachute money isn't designed as an amount that the clubs can blow on players to ensure their instant return to the EPL, it's there to cushion the financial blow of being relegated where your revenue may only be a quarter of what it was in the EPL. Very rarely do you see clubs spend millions on players when they come down, many have to sell their best assets to balance the books. The Championship has alway been competitive and I expect that it will remian that way even with this additional payments.

Surely the answer is not to give them more money for getting relegated though. The huge earnings gap between the PL and Championship needs to be reduced. The PL needs to be stopped from widening the gap between them and the rest of football.

Pompey must be laughing at the treatment they've had this season. First the PL make an exception of their own rules to allow PFC to sell players outside the transfer window (although to be fair, nobody's wanted to buy them so far). Next UEFA look like they might cave in and accept Pompey into Europe next season despite the fact they FAILED UTTERLY to get their application in by the deadline.

And now the PL clubs seem likely to vote for extra money should they be relegated. Which is a little like turkeys voting for Christmas to be cancelled every year.

Is the big man in charge of football a Pompey fan, because frankly it seems like little has actually happened to them to punish them for their gross financial mismanagement.

The parachute payments are even more of a reason to instigate a salary cap.

I think all parachute payments should be stopped. Maybe if they were promoted clubs would stop trying to pay beyond their means and bring some sanity back to football.
