Adagio for Strings , bit of a cliche now, every disaster and tragedy, stick on the Adagio for Strings but still the greatest piece of music ever written imho.

Shut up Glover, you said it was Beautiful by Blunt about a month ago.

(good choice though)

"O soave fanciulla..." Good choice. Or how about the quartet in the last act of Rigoletto "Bella figlia del'amore" - marvellous scenes.

But the one that gets me every time is the end of La Nozze di Figaro, when the count begs forgiveness from his wife: gives me a lump in the throat every time.
I've only got into opera over the last 5 years or so, but you're right, there is some incredibly emotional stuff. Wish I hadn't been such an inverse snob all these years.

Two usual standards for me though; firstly the 1965 recording of Elgar's cello concerto with Jacqueline Du Pre (conducted by Sir John Barbirolli). Have to be in the mood but that is SUCH a moving piece on all sorts of levels.

Secondly - every time I hear GOSBTS.

Oh, and Elgar's "Nimrod" from the Enigma Variations gets the old hairs on the arms standing up as well. Greatest piece of English music ever. FACT.
